Neither victim suffered life-threatening injuries, and a third person was grazed by gunfire. Students described scenes of panic as classes emptied into the corridors. Officials said the suspect had no known history of delinquency or radicalisation, and there was no apparent link to the nationwide high-school protests over underfunding that have shaken France for weeks. His parents were taken into custody as investigators tried to establish how he obtained the gun.

On Tuesday, France's national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office (PNAT) took over the case, saying an analysis of the teenager's digital devices "indicate probable affiliation with the True Crime Community (TCC) movement". It described TCC as "an ecosystem of online communities that glorifies perpetrators of mass killings and, in certain ways, incites the use of extreme violence". President Emmanuel Macron, meanwhile, praised the school staff's "composure and exemplary response", which "made it possible to avoid the worst".
