Transport. This morning I stood at the bus stop and realised I could describe the whole scene in Chinese in five seconds, and in English I would still be fumbling with prepositions.
So let me be precise. I get on a bus, a train, a plane. I get in a car or a taxi. And when I leave, I get off the bus but I get out of the car. 我从前一律说 get out of the bus,听着像从公交车里爬出来,很怪。
The journey has its own vocabulary too. A commute is the regular trip between home and work, and the word carries a small sigh inside it. (commute 那点「天天如此」的疲,中文的「通勤」传不出来) I used to say take the subway, which is American; in London it is the Tube, and across most of Europe the same tunnel is the metro. One hole in the ground, three names.
Then the numbers, where I keep slipping. If I say a two-hour commute, the hour stays singular, no s. That is what accuracy means to me today: not big words, but the small joints that hold a sentence together. Get the joint wrong and the whole thing rattles.
Today's four traps are all accuracy traps, the kind that do not stop you talking but quietly mark you down.
The first is the preposition after arrive. We arrive in a city or a country, and at a station, an airport, a stop. I arrived in Urumqi, I arrived at the airport. 说 I arrived the airport 就丢了落点。
The second is which tense carries the habit. I have been commuting for six years means it is still going on, and it is the tense I actually need for my own life. I commuted for six years means that chapter closed.
The third is the compound adjective before a noun. A three-hour journey, a ten-minute walk, a two-day trip. The unit stays singular because it is doing the job of an adjective.
The fourth is take versus get on. We take the line, the bus, the lift; we get on the vehicle itself. I take the number 4 bus and get on at the second stop.

• 拥堵 crowded → congested / gridlocked / packed(gridlocked 专指整条路卡死,画面最强)
• 出行 travel → journey / trip / commute / voyage(journey 重过程,trip 重来回,voyage 走海路)
• 出发 go → set off / head off / depart(set off 最口语,depart 最正式,播报里用)
• 路 road → route / lane / motorway / highway(lane 是车道,route 是走法)
• 赶上 catch → make / get(I barely made the train,比 caught 更有侥幸感)
• 延误 delay → hold-up / setback(hold-up 是路上堵出来的,setback 是计划被拖)
• 交通工具 vehicle → car / ride / wheels(口语里 my wheels 就是我的车)
• 票价 fare → ticket price / ticket(fare 是交通费,ticket 是那张票)
• 修 fix → repair / service / overhaul(service 是定期保养,overhaul 是大拆大修)
• 走路 near → within walking distance(比 close 多一层「脚能走到」的判断)
• commute(v./n. 通勤):the daily trip between home and work. 词根 commutare(拉丁语「交换、更换」):把住处和工作地一天换一遍,早期还含「月票换乘」的意思。
• congestion(n. 拥堵):traffic packed so tight that nothing moves. 词根 congerere(拉丁语「堆到一起」):车被堆成一团,就是 congestion。
• pedestrian(n. 行人):someone travelling on foot. 词根 pes / pedis(拉丁语「脚」):靠脚走路的人,与 pedal(踏板)、pedicure(足部护理)同源。
• junction(n. 路口、交汇处):the point where roads meet.
• itinerary(n. 行程单):the plan of a route, stop by stop. 词根 iter / itineris(拉丁语「路程」):一程接一程排下来的纸。
• fare(n. 车费、票价):the money you pay to ride. 源自古英语 faran(行走、远行):走路要付的那份钱。
• terminal(n. 航站楼、终点站):where a route begins or ends. 词根 terminus(拉丁语「界石、终点」):一条线的尽头,也是旅客换乘的地方。
• transit(n. 通行、公共交通):the act of passing through.
• freight(n. 货运):goods carried in bulk, not people.
• roundabout(n. 环岛):a junction where traffic circles.
• overtake(v. 超车):to pass a vehicle going the same way. over(越过)+ take(取得):越过去把它拿下,比 pass 更有动作感。
• toll(n. 通行费):a charge for using a road or bridge. 词根 telos(希腊语「税」):过桥过路都要交的那笔。
• carpool(n./v. 拼车):sharing one car for the same trip.
• gridlock(n. 全城堵死):traffic so jammed that nothing moves at all.
• mobility(n. 流动性、出行能力):the freedom to move around.
短语动词 · get / take 家族
Get on the bus at the second stop.
Get in, we're late.
• get off:下车(公交、火车)。Get off at the third stop.
• get out of:下车(小汽车)。We got out of the taxi at the corner.
It is easy to get around the old town on foot.
• get stuck in:堵在… I got stuck in traffic for an hour.
• take off:起飞。The plane took off twenty minutes late.
• pick up / drop off:接人 / 送人下车。Could you pick me up at six and drop me off at the station?
The metro is packed during rush hour.
Cities that invest in public transport move more people with less road.
• a means of transport:一种交通方式。Cycling is the cheapest means of transport in a flat city.
Congestion charging cut central London's traffic volume by about a fifth.
• carbon footprint:碳足迹。Flying short-haul has the largest carbon footprint per passenger-kilometre.
Door-to-door time matters more to commuters than the speed of the train.
反过来,中文直译最容易翻车的是「坐地铁去上班」说成 sit the subway to work。地道说法是 take the metro to work 或 commute by metro。
• The reason this matters is that…(把重点落在解释上,写作与 Part 3 都好用):The reason door-to-door time matters is that commuters count every minute, not every kilometre.
• What I got wrong was not the word but the preposition(今天准确维的自嘲句,也可以改成任何主语的版本):What I got wrong was not the vocabulary but the small joints between words.
• Compared with X, Y…(Task 1 比较图必备,比 than 稳):Compared with the Western Pacific, South-East Asia recorded a slightly larger share of road deaths.
• There is a marked difference between…(描述图表的差距):There is a marked difference between the two ends of the ranking.
• It is estimated that…(引数据比 people say 正式):It is estimated that around 1.19 million people died on the world's roads in a single year.
1. get stuck in traffic(堵在路上):I got stuck in traffic and missed the opening. 比 there was a traffic jam 有代入感,因为主语是我。
2. within walking distance(步行可达):The museum is within walking distance of the old town.
3. a two-hour commute(两小时通勤):A two-hour commute quietly eats a working day every week.
候补两条:door-to-door time(门到门时间)、the last mile(最后一公里,物流与通勤都用)。
• coach: today's sense is a long-distance bus, as in We took a coach across the province. The far more common sense is a trainer, as in a basketball coach.
• fare: today's sense is the money you pay to ride, as in a bus fare has gone up again. As a verb it means how you got on, as in How did you fare in the interview?
• terminal: today's sense is where a route begins or ends, as in the airport terminal. As an adjective it means final and irreversible, as in a terminal illness, and in computing it is the screen you type into.
• jam: today's sense is a line of vehicles that cannot move, as in a traffic jam on the ring road. The older sense is the fruit you spread on bread, as in strawberry jam.
• traffic: today's sense is vehicles moving along a road. As a verb it carries a darker meaning, to trade illegally, as in traffic in stolen goods.
• fine: today's sense is money paid for breaking a rule, as in a parking fine. The much more common sense is good or delicate, as in a fine distinction between two ideas.
• park: today's sense is to leave a vehicle somewhere, as in I parked outside the station. The older sense is the green space itself, and in British speech park yourself simply means to sit down.
• drive: today's sense is to operate a car. It also names the energy that pushes a person, as in She has real drive, and in computing it is the disk drive.
• ride: today's sense is a trip in a vehicle, as in a long ride home. In everyday speech give me a ride means give me a lift, with no horse anywhere near it.
注意:coach, terminal, traffic and fine are the four to watch, because each one changes meaning completely the moment you leave the road. Note too that fare as a verb has nothing to do with money, and traffic as a verb has nothing to do with cars.
Transport is where geography, economics and public health collide on the same strip of asphalt. Two numbers frame the problem. The first is safety: the WHO's 2023 status report counted about 1.19 million road traffic deaths in a single year, and roughly nine in ten of them in low- and middle-income countries, which together hold only about six in ten of the world's vehicles. Road injury is the leading cause of death for people aged 5 to 29. The second is volume: the global motor-vehicle fleet is projected to double by 2030.
Conventional wisdom says the cure is more road. Economics keeps disagreeing. Duranton and Turner's 2011 study, "The Fundamental Law of Road Congestion", found that newly built capacity fills up almost immediately, because faster roads pull trips out of other modes and lengthen the ones already being made. This is induced demand, and it explains why cities that widen motorways tend to meet the same jams a few years later at a larger scale. What does shift behaviour is price and alternative. Singapore introduced the world's first congestion pricing scheme in 1975; London followed in 2003 and cut central traffic volume by roughly a fifth; Stockholm, after a 2006 trial, made its charge permanent in 2007.
Then there is the quiet structural shift. The global electric car stock went from about 17,000 in 2010 to 7.2 million in 2019, and 47 per cent of that fleet sat in China. That is still under one per cent of the world's cars, so the headline "electric transition" describes a small, fast-moving tip of a very large fleet.
重点词:asphalt(沥青,词源可追到希腊语 asphaltos,黏结物)/ induced demand(诱导需求)/ congestion pricing(拥堵定价)/ fleet(车队,此处指全部在册车辆)/ short-haul(短途)。
![]()
The first chart is a horizontal bar showing where the world's road deaths happen, region by region. South-East Asia carries 28 per cent and the Western Pacific 25, so half the world's road deaths sit in two regions. Europe, with the safest roads and the strictest vehicle standards, accounts for 5 per cent, roughly a sixth of South-East Asia's share.
But the share is not the risk. A region can post a big share simply because it holds a big population. The correct measure of danger is the rate per 100,000 people, and on that measure the ranking moves, which is exactly the kind of distinction an examiner wants in an overview.
![]()
The second chart is a donut: of the 7.2 million electric cars on the road in 2019, 3.4 million were in China, 1.7 million in Europe, 1.5 million in the United States, and 0.6 million everywhere else. China alone held 47 per cent.
Set the two charts side by side and the contrast is the interesting part. The safety burden is concentrated in places with few vehicles; the electric fleet is concentrated in places with many. The countries that will add the most cars in the next decade are the ones with the least capacity to absorb them safely. That sentence is not a Task 1 sentence, because Task 1 may not explain causes. But it is exactly the kind of observation Task 2 rewards.
Every transport word today is a Latin or Old English root doing a modern job.
• portare, to carry: transport, portable, export, report (carry news back). Transport is quite literally carrying across.
• vehere / vectus, to carry, to ride: vehicle, vector, convection, vehement (originally "carried along").
• ire / iter, to go, a journey: itinerary, exit (go out), transit, ambition (originally "going around" canvassing for votes).
• jungere, to join: junction, join, conjunction, adjacent (lying next to).
• ped / pod, foot: pedestrian, pedal, pedestal, tripod (three-footed).
• terminus, boundary, end: terminal, terminate, determine (to fix the end).
Two more to carry away: congestion shares its root with digest and gesture, all from gerere, to carry; and fare is not Latin at all, it comes from Old English faran, to journey, which is why fare also means "how you get on".
Today's topic is transport, so it is a good day to pull old words back through it. Spaced repetition works best as transfer, not as a list.
• 2026-09-24, work. commute returns with a different face: it belongs to both topics, and today the emphasis is on the journey rather than the job. a two-hour commute is also the exact compound-adjective trap from today's grammar note.
• 2026-09-26, maths. distribution and outlier are doing visible work again. The road-death shares are a distribution with one clear outlier at the low end, Europe at 5 per cent, and the electric-car donut is a share of a whole.
• 2026-09-28, health. resilience transfers into infrastructure: a transport network's resilience is measured by how it behaves when one link fails, not by its average speed on a good day.
• 2026-09-25, education. shape fits the data: road design shapes behaviour more reliably than road signs do.
• 2026-09-27, health add-on. sedentary reappears from the other side. A city built only for cars makes everyone sedentary by default, which is how transport policy turns into public health policy.

1. How do you usually get around your city?(关键词:on foot / take the metro / get stuck in)
2. How long is your commute?(关键词:a forty-minute ride / door-to-door time)
3. Do you prefer the train or the plane for long trips?(关键词:boarding time / carbon footprint)
4. Is public transport good where you live?(关键词:rush hour / packed / frequency)
5. Should cities charge drivers to enter the centre?(关键词:congestion charge / cut traffic / unfair on the poor)
6. Will electric cars solve our transport problems?(关键词:charging network / the last mile / grid)
Part 2
Cue card:Describe a journey you remember well. You should say where you went, how you travelled, what happened during the journey, and explain why you still remember it.
The journey I still think about is a night train heading west out of the Hexi corridor towards Dunhuang, nine hours of darkness with the desert sliding past the window.
We got on at about nine, found our berths, and I spent an hour just watching the platform lamps get smaller.
Somewhere past midnight the train stopped in open country for forty minutes, no station, no explanation, and nobody on board seemed to mind.
What I remember is not the destination but the accuracy of that silence. Nothing was scheduled, nothing was late, and the whole trip felt like a measured pause.
加分表达:the desert sliding past the window(沙漠从窗边滑过,画面感)、in open country(在旷野里)、a measured pause(被量过的停顿)。
I arrived Dunhuang in the morning,arrive 后面必须跟 in 或 at;也别说 a nine-hours train,复合形容词里 hour 不加 s。
Four words today, and their stress does not sit in the same place, which is exactly why they trip people up.
• route: British speakers usually say /ruːt/, American speakers usually /raʊt/, and both are standard. Pick one and stay with it inside a single conversation.
• congestion: /kənˈdʒestʃən/, with the stress on jes and everything in front of it flattened. Chinese speakers tend to drag the stress forward and say something like "康杰斯申", which breaks the word in half.
• itinerary: /aɪˈtɪnərəri/, five syllables with the stress on tin and three of the five reduced to weak vowels. It is the longest word today, and slowing down is what makes it accurate.
• vehicle: /ˈviːɪkl/ in British English, /ˈviːhɪkl/ in American, both accepted. The h is barely heard in the British form, so do not over-articulate it.
Linking note: get on it runs together as /ɡeˈtɒnɪt/, the final t of get sliding straight into on. In an hour and a half the h of hour is silent, so it reads /ən ˈaʊər ənd ə hɑːf/. The rule underneath is simple: a preposition always leans on the verb in front of it.
Most of today's words came into English through Latin, and they fan out across the Romance languages in recognisable shapes. Transport stays transport in French, transporte in Spanish, trasporto in Italian; pedestrian becomes piéton, peatón, pedone, all still standing on the same Latin foot. Language is one net with different knots.
One thread worth pulling further: the Spanish viaje and the French voyage both descend from Latin viaticum, "provisions for a journey", which itself comes from via, a road. English kept via for the road itself and borrowed voyage for the trip, so the same root now names both the way and the going.
An English line to carry away: Accuracy on the road starts with the preposition, not the engine.

Task 1
The bar chart shows the share of global road traffic deaths by WHO region. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes.
图二:The chart shows the regional composition of the global electric car stock in 2019. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes.
• South-East Asia accounted for the largest share at 28 per cent, closely followed by the Western Pacific at 25 per cent.
• Together, the two leading regions accounted for just over half of all road traffic deaths.
• By contrast, Europe recorded the smallest share, at only 5 per cent.
• China held 47 per cent of the global electric car stock, more than the next two regions combined.
• The remaining regions together made up less than one tenth of the total.
• Overall, the distribution was heavily skewed towards a single category, with a long tail behind it.
Congestion charging works because it prices a scarce resource, but it must be paired with alternatives or it simply taxes the poor.
• 关键词:road pricing, demand management, regressive effect, public transport revenue
Admittedly, a flat charge falls hardest on those who can least afford to change their travel habits.
Fare-free transit increases ridership, but the money may buy more capacity elsewhere than it buys at the ticket machine.
Free fares do not by themselves fix a network that is slow, sparse or unsafe.
Electric cars clean the exhaust pipe, not the traffic jam; they change emissions, not volume.
• 关键词:charging infrastructure, grid capacity, induced demand, life-cycle emissions
Battery costs are falling fast, and the transition may accelerate faster than these figures suggest.
Protected cycle lanes are the cheapest way to move people short distances, and they only work when they are physically separated.
• 关键词:protected lane, last mile, road space reallocation, safety in numbers
In cities with long distances and harsh winters, cycling can only ever carry a modest share.
The way we move was rebuilt in about a hundred and fifty years, and the dates are unusually sharp.
1825: the Stockton and Darlington Railway opened in northern England, the first public railway to use steam locomotives, and the beginning of scheduled mechanical transport. 1863: London's Metropolitan Railway opened, the world's first underground railway, built because the streets above could no longer carry the traffic. 1886: Karl Benz patented the Motorwagen, the first practical automobile, and within a generation the street had a new master.
1908: Ford put the Model T into production, and the car stopped being a rich man's machine. 1956: the United States passed the Federal Aid Highway Act, which built the Interstate system, and the shape of the modern city followed the exits. 1964: Japan opened the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, the first high-speed railway, and proved that a train could beat a plane on the routes that matter. 1969: the Boeing 747 flew for the first time and made long-haul travel ordinary.
Then the century turned. By 2019 the global electric car stock had reached 7.2 million, from a standing start of about 17,000 in 2010.
None of which belongs in a Task 1 answer, which must stay purely descriptive. But in Task 2, one accurate date outworks three adjectives.

Looking from 古凉州今武威, transport was never about the road alone. It was about where the road decided to stop. 《晋书·张轨传》describes 姑臧卧龙城 in numbers a surveyor would respect: 南北七里,东西三里, seven li north to south and three east to west, its ground shaped like a dragon.
That geometry was not decoration. 姑臧 sat astride the Hexi corridor, and the goods that made the town rich moved through it in both directions. A Sogdian letter written at 姑臧 in 312, one of the oldest surviving Sogdian documents, tells of a merchant caravan leader writing home to Samarkand about goods dispatched inland.
And the city fed its travellers from the ground around it. 凉州畜牧天下饶, from《汉书·地理志》, meant horses and herds were the real engine of movement: a posting station empire runs on livestock. While 凉州绯色天下最, from《魏书·尉聿传》, tells of the dyed silk that travelled the other way, west and east, on the same road.
One person from here travelled farthest. 李自标, a 凉州 man born in 1760, went to study in Naples as a boy and by 1793 was serving as an interpreter on the Macartney mission to the Qing court. If transport is about getting somewhere, he is the local proof that the somewhere can be very far away.
Today at the foot of 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山)the road still runs past the same slope, and people still travel it for the same reasons.
