I was standing by the window this morning, phone in hand, trying to figure out where the nearest express pickup point was. My thumb opened the map, and there it was: a little blue dot, pulsing, saying "you are here". It hit me that I use this thing every single day, yet I have almost no idea how it actually works. So I looked it up, and now I want to say it in English.
Your phone does not really "know" where you are. It triangulates. The GPS receiver in your phone listens to signals from at least four satellites, and each satellite is basically shouting, "I am here, and the time is exactly 16:23:05.00001." Your phone compares the arrival times of these signals. Radio waves travel at the speed of light, so a tiny delay means a tiny distance. Three satellites give you a 2D fix; the fourth fixes altitude and corrects the clock error.
• I have relied on GPS every day since I got my first smartphone in 2013.
• I have been using navigation apps for more than ten years.

How GPS finds you
GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It is a constellation of at least 24 satellites orbiting Earth twice a day, each broadcasting its position and the exact time.
Here is the elegant part: your phone does not send anything up to the satellites. It just listens. Each signal carries a timestamp. Because radio waves travel at the speed of light, a later timestamp means a longer distance. If satellite A says "my signal left at 16:00:00.000000" and your phone receives it at 16:00:00.070000, the 70 microseconds translate to roughly 21 kilometres.
With three such measurements, your phone draws three spheres and finds where they intersect on the ground. But the clock inside your phone is cheap, so its time is slightly off. That error would put you kilometres away. A fourth satellite solves that error too. The result is a fix accurate to within a few metres, enough for a map to drop you on the right street.
Atomic clocks make this possible. A GPS satellite carries rubidium and caesium clocks stable to within nanoseconds. One billionth of a second equals about 30 centimetres at the speed of light. So when engineers say "every nanosecond counts", they really mean it.
• constellation:not just stars; here, the arranged group of satellites.
• intersect:cross each other at one point; from Latin inter-(之间)+ secare(切)。
• rubidium / caesium:alkali metals used in atomic clocks.
• nanosecond:one billionth of a second.
词源小段子:navigate 来自 navis(船)+ agere(驱动)。
• atomos(不可分割):atom, atomic, anatomy(ana- 分开 + tome 切,注意区分同源但不是同根)。
• 09-19 数学期的 vertex = vertere(转)。GPS 卫星的轨道方向 constantly change, but the geometry of triangulation is all about angles and vertices.
• 09-14 环境期的 renewable = re- + novus(新的)。
• 09-06 家庭期的 heritage = hereditas(继承)。

词根:navis / satelles / tri- / angulus / capere / atomos。
1. Describe an app you use every day. Why do you use it? Would you pay for it?
2. How do you find your way in a new city? Map app, asking people, or landmarks?
3. What technology do you think is most underappreciated?
IPA:/traɪˈæŋ.ɡju.leɪt/
Latin of the day: per aspera ad astra — "through hardships to the stars."
The UN's Global E-waste Monitor 2020 reported that the world produced 53.6 million tonnes of electronic waste in 2019. That is a 21 per cent jump in just five years. Asia generated the largest share, about 24.9 million tonnes, followed by the Americas at 13.1 million tonnes and Europe at 12 million tonnes. Africa and Oceania added 2.9 and 0.7 million tonnes respectively. Yet only 17.4 per cent of this waste was formally collected and recycled. The rest was mostly dumped or burned, wasting an estimated 57 billion dollars worth of recoverable materials.

Source: ITU and UNU, Global E-waste Monitor 2020, e-waste generation by region, 2019.
Write a report of at least 150 words in 20 minutes. Your report should include an overview and key features. Use percentages and make comparisons.
1. The largest slice was held by Asia at 46.5%, followed by the Americas at 24.4%.
2. Together, the three smallest regions made up less than a tenth of the total.
3. Asia generated roughly twice as much e-waste as the Americas.
• Overall: Asia dominated, while Africa and Oceania together accounted for only about 6.7%.
• Detail: The Americas and Europe were close, at 24.4% and 22.4% respectively.
• Conclusion: Roughly 70% of global e-waste came from just three regions: Asia, the Americas and Europe.
The phone in my hand is the newest link in that long Liangzhou chain of "knowing where I am". Two flagships launched in 2026 push the point further than the GPS box in my pocket ever did.
Apple's iPhone 18 Pro. Apple unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro line in September 2026. Its new C2 modem is reported to support 5G over satellite, the NR-NTN standard, so in a dead zone, with no tower in sight, the phone can still reach out through space and tell someone where you are. It is not quite the "browse from a mountain" dream yet. Most coverage says the satellite link will at first cover limited services like messages and maps, not full web browsing. But the direction is clear: your position is no longer something the phone guesses only when the network is kind. With iOS 27 and Apple Intelligence, the device also acts more on its own, translating in the camera viewfinder and working from your intent.
Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra. Samsung showed the Galaxy S26 Ultra in February 2026, and its positioning hardware is the fuller story for our theme. The chip talks to the whole satellite set at once, GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, China's BDS and Japan's QZSS, so it locks your spot almost anywhere on Earth. It adds two-way satellite messaging through Iridium, and a 200-megapixel camera backed by an on-device AI suite, Galaxy AI, that edits photos and reads your screen for you.
Why does this matter beyond the spec sheet? IDC, the market tracker, predicts that in 2026 China's new-generation AI phones will ship 147 million units, up 31.6 per cent year on year, and for the first time take 53 per cent of the whole market. More than half the phones sold will think a little on their own. The device that pins your location is quietly becoming the device that acts for you.
From a Han-dynasty slip that records a remedy, to a rocket that lands in Minqin, to a phone in my pocket that knows the sky by name, Liangzhou's old question, "where am I", keeps getting a sharper answer.
中文救场:今天说的两款机子,苹果 iPhone 18 Pro(2026 年 9 月发布,C2 基带支持卫星 5G/NR-NTN 标准,首发仍只覆盖短信、地图等有限服务)和三星 Galaxy S26 Ultra(2026 年 2 月发布,定位硬件同时吃 GPS、GLONASS、Galileo、北斗 BDS、QZSS 多系统,双向卫星短信走 Iridium,2 亿像素主摄加 Galaxy AI 端侧智能)。
From the satellites above us to the map in my pocket, navigation just asks an old question in a new way: where am I, and where am I going? People in Liangzhou have been asking that for ages. Holding my GPS today, I suddenly see a whole map of Liangzhou answers to it, and every one of them is about place, precision or the sky.

Reading the city from the sky. Back in 1960, an aerial photograph already caught the old Liangzhou prefectural city as a clean square, a moat wrapped around it like a belt, streets inside laid out like the veins of a body. That was remote sensing before the word existed. Long before satellites, people here had learned to read their own town from up high.
A rocket in my own backyard. On 2026-08-19, a Zhuque-3 rocket lifted off from the Dongfeng commercial space zone and its first stage soft-landed on a pad in Minqin, part of Liangzhou and today's Wuwei. It was China's first land recovery of an orbital-class rocket. I still grin thinking a rocket came down in my own backyard, more or less. The same sky that carries GPS satellites now carries a Liangzhou rocket home.
The sky as a living room. Down in Minqin, an aviation park by the Hongya Mountain Reservoir has built a "golden triangle" of low-altitude tourism with an aviation town and the Suwu Airport. It cost 386 million yuan, and it is the first "aviation plus astronomy" study park in this part of the land. Hot-air balloons, paragliders and flight simulators turn the sky into something a visitor can actually touch. There is even a national policy that calls this kind of place an "aerial cultural lounge".
Healing down to the millimetre. In Liangzhou, today's Wuwei, the Heavy-ion Centre of the Wuwei Cancer Hospital runs the carbon-ion therapy system born from Chinese research. It is the only place on earth that runs two such machines side by side. To treat a tumour, doctors must fix its position to the millimetre, much as GPS fixes yours. Thousands of years away in time, the medical bamboo slips of the Han dynasty were already being written on this same ground. Ancient slips and modern ion beams meet here as one Liangzhou story of healing.
Medicine written on wood. Those Han bamboo slips are not just old texts. They are Liangzhou's earliest medical records, and they sit at the head of a long line that ends, for now, at the ion beam. A place that wrote its medicine on wood two thousand years ago now shoots atoms at tumours. That is a longer arc than most cities can claim.
Music that travelled the Silk Road. The court music of Liangzhou, the Xiliang yuewu, later flowed east along the Silk Road and fed into the Tang dynasty's "Rainbow and Feather Robe" suite. Behind the beauty sits real technology: acoustics, tuning, the craft of the instruments. Science and art were never strangers here.
A town that keeps renewing itself. And then there is the living texture: the lanes of Liangzhou, the old folk tunes, the way a place keeps finding new forms without dropping its memory. Technology is not only machines; it is also how a city stays alive.
Standing at the foot of 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山), you can still trace the outline of 姑臧卧龙城, the old city of Liangzhou. Whether you read it as "seven li by three" or follow Professor Su Bai's revised reading, the point is the same: a city is a map people build before maps become paper. We still need to know where we are. The tools have changed from rope and sight to satellites and atomic clocks, but the question has not.
