Week 9|Review Is More Honest Than the Score
Look Back to Move Forward
A score tells you where you landed. A review tells you how you got there.
These two things are not the same. A score is like a photograph: it catches one moment. It may be useful, but it is still flat and still. A review is more like walking back along the road. You see where you slowed down, where you turned too early, where you missed a sign, and where you actually did well.
In The Analects, Zengzi says that he examines himself every day. The sentence is not about blaming oneself again and again. It is about staying awake to one’s own actions. A person who can look back honestly is not weaker than others. He is often stronger, because he is willing to learn from what has already happened.
After an exam, it is natural to care about the number. Everyone does. But if you stop only at the number, the exam becomes a label. If you continue one step further, it becomes a map.
Ask yourself: Which mistakes came from carelessness? Which came from not understanding? Which came from poor time control? Which questions did I actually solve better than before? A good review does not only search for what was wrong. It also notices what is beginning to improve.
Do not use review as a stick to hit yourself. Use it as a lamp. A lamp does not scold the road. It simply shows where the next step is.
This week, choose one recent test or homework set. Do not rewrite everything. Just make three small notes: one thing I did better, one mistake I can understand, and one action I will take next time. If you can do this honestly, the score will no longer be only a result. It will become a teacher.
Source Notes
The opening idea about self-review refers to The Analects, Xue Er, where Zengzi says, “吾日三省吾身,” meaning that he examines himself daily. The English rendering in this article is original and adapted for readability.
