1988年，英军开始对其装备的“海鹞”FRS.1进行升级，将其配备的“蓝狐”雷达更换为“蓝雌狐”雷达，同时将“飞马”发动机也更新为升级过的“飞马”Mk106，并加装了电子对抗设备。更新后的“海鹞”被称为“海鹞”FRS.2，后更名“海鹞”FA.2。在升级完成后，英军对新“海鹞”进行了极限挂载测试。
在测试中，“海鹞”FRS.2挂载了4枚“天空闪光”空空导弹与2个副油箱。
