NVIDIA Turns to Chinese Base-Station Makers to Push AI Computing to the Network Edge

In October 2025 the company invested one billion dollars for a stake of about 2.9 percent in Nokia and agreed to collaborate on radio equipment that runs artificial intelligence alongside ordinary mobile traffic. Nokia plans to offer the resulting systems commercially from 2027, with early tests scheduled for later this year. Work already under way with operators such as T-Mobile has shown base stations that keep phones connected while also performing AI calculations on the same hardware.

The practical reason is straightforward. Large AI models are still trained mainly inside centralized data centers. Once those models move into daily use—on phones, vehicles or factory equipment—sending every request over long distances adds delay and cost. Base stations already stand close to users. If they can also run AI workloads, the network itself becomes a place where computing happens, not merely a pipe that carries data.

This approach is known as AI-RAN. It means adding AI processing to the radio equipment that connects devices. The same hardware can manage radio signals more efficiently and, at the same time, offer local AI services. Research firms differ on exact figures, yet several project tens of billions of dollars in related spending by the early 2030s. NVIDIA is offering its processors and CUDA software tools as a shared platform for both the radio functions and the new AI tasks.

Against that background, Chinese media reports in early August 2026 said NVIDIA is also talking with Chinese base-station makers about 6G equipment intended for overseas markets. According to those accounts, which cite people familiar with the supply chain, the company has been in contact since 2025 with Shenzhen-based Jiaxian Communication. The two sides are described as developing systems that use NVIDIA processors and software. A first prototype is targeted for the end of 2026, with possible trial networks in 2027 or 2028. Jiaxian, founded in 2011, focuses on AI-enabled radio products. Tongyu Communication announced around the same time that it planned to acquire about 25 percent of Jiaxian for three billion yuan.

Neither NVIDIA nor Jiaxian has publicly confirmed the reported talks. The accounts say NVIDIA would supply the chips and software while Chinese partners handle radio design, antennas, assembly and testing, then sell finished equipment outside China. Industry studies note that China produces a large share of the world’s base-station hardware, reflecting concentrated manufacturing capacity and accumulated engineering experience.

The reported discussions fit a wider commercial pattern. Building large new data-center clusters requires heavy capital. In many regions it may be more practical to place computing power inside the radio network that already exists. NVIDIA’s announced partnership with Nokia is one concrete step. Media reports of talks with Chinese suppliers describe a second, parallel effort. Both point toward the same goal: base stations that keep devices online and also run AI tasks close to those devices.

Practical constraints remain. Base stations must use power carefully, stay reliable for years, and meet detailed operator standards. Placing general-purpose processors into radio gear raises questions about energy use and cost compared with chips designed only for radio work. Operators will decide how quickly they adopt systems that can both improve network performance and sell AI services to customers. Some experimental pricing plans already combine ordinary data charges with fees for AI model use, yet large-scale business models are still taking shape.

The direction is clear. AI infrastructure is moving beyond the walls of big data centers. The radio network that carries phone calls and internet traffic is being redesigned so it can also perform calculations. NVIDIA’s announced partnership with Nokia is one concrete step. Media reports of supplier talks in China describe a second, parallel effort. Trial networks over the next two years will show whether base stations can successfully do both jobs at commercial scale.
