美军南方司令部8月4日宣布启动“西半球联合特遣部队”，以取代此前美军打击所谓“毒品恐怖分子”的“南方之矛”联合特遣部队。
南方司令部当天发表声明称，“西半球联合特遣部队”将协调美军与盟友及伙伴的行动，以应对威胁、加强地区安全，并“对整个西半球的危机做出快速反应”。南方司令部司令多诺万称，该部队“是美军南方司令部应对整个西半球威胁的行动力量”。（新华社）
