契丹人好不容易进入中原花花世界，耶律德光认了个好大儿，胃口自然越来越大。耶律德光多次遣使斥责后晋“礼数不周”，桑维翰必须亲自起草谢罪表，用词卑屈到“臣罪当诛”的程度。这种事干多了，小桑同学也忍不了，只能发挥阿Q精神：侍奉契丹，如果喊他为皇帝则太屈辱，喊他为爹也屈辱，不如喊他爷爷算了，这还能忍一下。因为普通人家爷爷都死了，与孙子很难见面。

天福四年（939年），桑维翰因得罪武将杨光远而被外放，历任彰德、泰宁、晋昌三地节度使。天福七年（942年）六月，石敬瑭病逝，养子石重贵继位，是为后晋出帝。天福八年（943年）三月，石重贵将桑维翰召回中央，任侍中、监修国史。

张彦泽带兵闯入开封府衙，问桑维翰在哪里。桑维翰厉声说：“我是堂堂大臣，让国家走到这种地步，理当为国而死，你怎敢无礼！”接着他升堂端坐，对张彦泽说：“你有什么功劳，不仅成为使相，还统治一方，当国家危急之时，不能尽犬马之力以报效国家，反而背叛国家，帮助戎狄作威作福，成为乱臣贼子，你心安吗？”张彦泽为其气场所震慑，“股栗不敢仰视”，退出后对人感慨不敢再面对桑维翰的威严。当晚就派人在开封府衙缢杀桑维翰，时年四十九岁。
