当地时间1月8日，约55头领航鲸在新西兰南岛北端的一处沙滩搁浅，其中6头已经死亡。
近200名救援人员迅速行动，自发组成人链助鲸脱困。经过相关人员的解救，目前仍有15头领航鲸搁浅，其余个体已顺利游回深海。
领航鲸有强烈的社会性，如果有一头领航鲸游入浅水区，鲸群内的其他成员便会紧随其后，形成群体搁浅。
