2010年，中央电视台购买了《青蛇与白蛇》在中国大陆的版权，并将其命名为《青蛇外传》播出，该剧故事框架仍是源自白蛇与许仙的爱情神话，但是故事重新改编，人物形象有了新的创新，整出戏轻松、活泼，喜感十足，彻底颠覆了老版此类故事的传统，引发观众的观剧潮。
