Tianhaizi Mountain is located about 10 kilometers southeast of Kangding city, belonging to the northeastern range of the Gongga Mountain. It is named for a glacier-fed lake at its base whose water resembles a rice paddy ready for planting.
In mid-November, the Sichuan Gongga Mountain National Nature Reserve Administration, along with multiple Kangding city departments, issued a notice. Effective Nov 20, a comprehensive closure was imposed on multiple peaks and undeveloped areas in towns including Gonggashan and Tagong. The notice explicitly prohibited all hiking and other activities, stating that winter conditions were complex and no longer safe for outdoor sports.

Despite the closure, local guide noted that many people still attempt to climb there.
