原来晚清以来，江南日益繁华，商埠林立，人流往返不息。杭嘉湖平原的河湖港汊，就集中一批秦楼娃馆，专做皮肉生意。《老残游记》中，专门写了有一类尼姑庵，也是明修栈道暗渡陈仓，一边阿弥陀佛，一边淫乱无度的。刚才听红衫儿一说，无疑便是这样一个去处。
