鲎（hòu），俗称马蹄蟹，是在古生代就出现的“活化石”，有4亿多年的历史。现存4种：中国鲎Tachypleus tridentatus、南方鲎Tachypleus gigas、圆尾蝎鲎Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda、美洲鲎Limulus polyphemus。繁殖季节，雌雄往往成对活动。雌鲎背着雄鲎在潮间带挖穴产卵。
