建置沿革表，取自1848年（道光28年）《道光海宁州志·卷之一·沿革》。
秦汉时期设置海盐县，明为海宁县属杭州府。乾隆三十八年七月（1773年），升为海宁州。
民国元年（1912年）二月，改海宁州为县，直属浙江省。
1949年5月7日，海宁解放，初隶属省人民政府第一专员公署。
1949年10月，改属嘉兴专区。
1986年11月，撤县设市。
