Tristan

From being invisible in class
to becoming the darling of prestigious schools?
——Tristan's Growth Formula Revealed
Tristan
Farragut Class of 2025 Graduate
Admitted to: University of California, San Diego
Tristan
During the 2025 university application season, Han Jiasuo (Tristan) from the Senior 2 class of Tianjin Farragut School's American High School program secured offers from 10 world-class universities, including: University of California at San Diego, McGill University, University of Connecticut, University of Edinburgh, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of California, Santa Barbara, University of Minnesota Twin Cities, University of Manchester, University of Liverpool, and Rutgers University.

This young man, who once dared not raise his hand in class but now confidently coordinates club activities, used his high school years at Farragut to complete his transformation from an “introvert” to a “jack-of-all-trades,” unlocking his own unique path to growth.

Choosing a school is like opening a blind box?
His reasons for choosing Farragut are so real.
Tristan's journey in international education began with the idea of studying abroad that emerged in elementary school. A trip to the United States during the fifth-grade winter break planted a seed that took root in his heart. During middle school, in search of a path more suited to his growth needs, he and his family turned their attention to a new educational path leading to the world, hoping to lay the foundation for a more internationally-minded growth trajectory in a multicultural environment.
Tristan as a child
Tristan is with his mom and dad.
After visiting several schools, Farragut became his “chosen one”—the friendly teachers were like friends, the positive academic atmosphere was free of oppression, and the rich activities and courses were dazzling. “There are no rigid constraints here, but there is space for free exploration; there are no single evaluation standards, but there is respect for individuality.”
The photo on the left shows Tristan with his homeroom teacher, Mr. Yuan, and the photo on the right shows Tristan with his foreign teacher, Ashley R.
After enrollment, reality exceeded expectations. The tiered curriculum (Standard and Honors) felt like a tailor-made “growth ladder” for him. He could challenge himself with Honors courses in his strong subjects while maintaining his GPA through Standard courses in weaker areas. The flexible design of the American high school curriculum also helped him overcome the anxiety of “one exam deciding everything.” The GPA system, composed of homework, quizzes, and monthly exams, gave him the confidence to make mistakes and improve gradually.
As he put it, “Farragut's courses don't ‘force you to be perfect,’ but rather ‘help you find the right pace.’” This inclusive environment perfectly supported the once timid teenager, allowing him to gradually unfold at a comfortable pace and become the person he wanted to be.
Tristan
Are top students not staying up late? His “anti-cramming” strategy hides a great deal of wisdom.
In terms of academics, Tristan's “anti-anxiety” strategy is refreshing. He never gets bogged down in the daily details, but instead draws up a “growth roadmap” at the beginning of each semester—clearly defining the number of exams in North American courses, the minimum standardized test scores, and the GPA benchmark—and then moves forward step by step.
Tristan with his homeroom teacher, Mr. Yuan, and his good friends
What was most surprising was his exam preparation strategy: he completed all his coursework without fail one month before the exam, then focused on reviewing for the last month. On the day before the exam and on the day of the exam itself? He completely let loose! He listened to music, played games, and did whatever he wanted to relax. “Overdoing practice questions only increases tension; long-term accumulation is the key.” This composure allowed him to maintain his own pace amid the intense pressure of studying, and his grades continued to rise steadily.
Tristan ranked 166th in the world in the NFS NoLimits gaming competition.
Beyond academics, the badminton club was the source of joy in his high school life. From a novice who couldn’t even serve properly when he first joined, to the club president who served multiple terms, he not only saw a dramatic improvement in his skills but also developed exceptional social and organizational abilities while planning club activities and coordinating competitions. “In the past, I only cared about winning or losing in competitions. Now I realize that the time spent strategizing with teammates and fighting side by side is far more precious than the outcome.” This understanding of the “process” has brought him a new clarity in his growth, and the once socially awkward teenager has learned to shine within the team.

From campus to the world:
He took Farragut's “growth gene” with him as he ventured out into the world.
Looking back on his time at Farragut, Tristan succinctly summarizes it with three words: “happy, confident, and fulfilled.” The boy who used to blush and feel nervous when called on by the teacher in class can now discuss issues with teachers calmly and even boldly propose different ideas—all of this stems from the school's encouraging atmosphere for expression. From needing parents to guide him step by step, to being able to independently complete project-based assignments (researching materials, creating PowerPoint presentations, and giving public speeches), his self-learning abilities have already accumulated enough “skills points” to prepare him for independent university life.
The photo above shows Tristan's passion for sailing.
The photo below shows him posing with the captain when he was 11 years old during his trip to the United States.
Looking forward to his upcoming university life, he is eager to hone his independence and self-discipline in a broader environment. For his younger peers, his advice is simple yet practical: “Don't let anxiety derail you during the application season; maintaining your own pace is most important. When choosing a university, focus on ‘fit’ rather than rankings. First establish a broad direction for your major, then gradually explore the details once you arrive at university.”
Tristan and his parents
Now, Tristan is about to set off overseas with the courage and abilities bestowed upon him by Farragut. The once introverted teenager who needed “room for error” has grown wings through acceptance and exploration. His story proves that growth is never about “forcing oneself into a mold,” but rather about gradually becoming the person one aspires to be on the right stage—and Farragut provides just such a place where one can freely spread their wings.
