China's vast consumer market is an opportunity for the world.“The growth in China in the consumption market has been more stable. At the same time, the authorities’boosting of the economyis helping a lot,” Sigmund Bjørgo, China Director of the Norwegian Seafood Council, said in an interview with SFC in the 19th Shanghai International Fisheries and Seafood Exhibition from August 27th to 29th.
In 2023, China was the eighth largest market for Norwegian seafood exports, and in 2024, the sixth largest. By July 2025, Norwegian seafood exports to China had increased by NOK613 million (about USD60 million), an 88% year-on-year increase, making China the second-largest global export market for Norwegian seafood.
Sigmund Bjørgo believes China's seafood e-commerce is a great example for global businesses to learn from. The staggering scale of seafood sales on various Chinese e-commerce platforms has significantly increased the availability of imported seafood, making purchasing more convenient than in Europe.
Looking ahead, Sigmund Bjørgo expects consumption will be a key driver of China's economic development over the next five to ten years, which will flourish in China.
