湘西“赶尸”是古代为了将客死他乡之人遗体，运回故乡的一种方式。
电影里是半夜尸体自己跳跃前进。
而历史上真实情况可能是这样的：
由赶尸人及其助手，用竹竿抬运尸体（将尸体手臂绑在竹竿上，前后两人扛抬），夜间行走，远看如尸体双手平举跳跃前进。
还有可能是赶尸人将尸体包裹起来，背在背上运输，前面一人持铃引路。
