起初，这个性格里带着点 “男生气” 的女孩还在担心：“会不会没人来？” 但开社那天，同学们的热情支持让她瞬间安心。“大家一起练舞、编动作、准备演出，那种为了同一个爱好并肩努力的感觉，现在想起来还很温暖。”街舞社的成功，不仅是 Evey 领导力的初次展现，更让她明白：“学校给予的不只是一个场地，更是一份‘敢想就敢试’的底气”。

把时间变成“可信赖的伙伴”

“我曾是个重度拖延症患者。”Evey 笑着坦白。初中时，她总把作业拖到睡前，结果既没学好，也没玩好。但从十年级开始，她找到了属于自己的时间管理法则：“在学校把事情往前赶，放学就能彻底拥抱热爱。”

于是，课堂上的她专注高效，利用课间整理笔记、解决疑问；放学后的时间，则被兴趣填满—— 街舞室里挥洒汗水，乐器前沉淀心绪，球场上释放活力。“学的时候不想玩，玩的时候不想学，反而两样都能做好。”

On the campus of Farragut School in Tianjin, Guo Shengying (Evey) is always surrounded by diverse energy: in the street dance studio, she is the organizer leading members in refining their moves; on stage, she ignites the crowd's enthusiasm with Hiphop; on the golf course, her composed swing contrasts with the quiet melody flowing from her fingertips at the piano. This girl, who infuses her passion into her daily life, proves through her actions that interests and academics are not mutually exclusive choices, but rather two paths that enrich growth. Where interests take root and blossom

“In my first year of college, when I saw the school recruiting student club founders, I suddenly thought — there has to be a street dance club!” Recalling the original motivation behind founding the club, Evey’s eyes sparkled. Since first encountering Hiphop in her childhood, street dance had become an inseparable part of her life. As her dance repertoire grew and her choreography skills improved, she no longer felt satisfied with practicing alone in the dance studio. Farragut’s philosophy of “providing every student with the space to explore possibilities” perfectly nurtured this passion.

At first, this girl with a bit of a “tomboyish” personality was worried: “Will anyone show up?” But on the day the club was launched, her classmates' enthusiastic support instantly put her at ease. “Practicing dance moves together, choreographing routines, and preparing for performances—the feeling of working side by side toward a shared passion still warms my heart when I think back on it.” The success of the street dance club was not only Evey's first demonstration of leadership but also made her realize: “The school doesn't just provide a space; it gives you the confidence to ‘dare to dream and dare to try.’”

This confidence is increasingly evident in campus activities. For two consecutive years, Evey's street dance performances on the Halloween stage have always ignited the crowd. “Dancing in the studio is about refining technique, but on the school stage, hearing the cheers of my classmates gives me a sense of pride that is truly unique.” She says it is this collective feedback that has given her the courage to “share her passion openly.” Whether it's the precise swings on the golf course or the improvised melodies on the piano or guitar strings, the school's diverse platforms always provide her with an outlet to showcase her talents — this might just be the best environment for nurturing interests: “No limits, no judgments, just a space to grow freely.”

The secret to balance:

Turn time into a “trusted partner”

“I used to be a severe procrastinator,” Evey confessed with a smile. In junior high school, she always put off her homework until bedtime, with the result that she neither studied well nor played well. But starting in tenth grade, she found her own time management method: “Get things done at school, so you can fully embrace what you love after school.”

So, in class, she is focused and efficient, using breaks to organize her notes and resolve any questions she may have. After school, she fills her time with her interests — sweating it out in the street dance studio, calming her mind with music, and releasing her energy on the sports field. “When I'm studying, I don't want to play, and when I'm playing, I don't want to study, but I can do both well.”

This “segmented focus” approach not only helped her maintain excellent grades and standardized test scores, but also made her interests a “spice” for her studies. “Sometimes when I'm tired from writing an economics paper, playing a guitar piece can suddenly clarify my thoughts.” For her, balance isn't about “sacrifice,” but about letting academics and hobbies become each other's “energy stations”—just as the rhythm of street dance can activate the mind, and the logic of economics can add depth to choreography, they are inherently complementary.

From economic theory to life philosophy

The application essays were the part Evey felt most confident about writing. In the North American curriculum, macroeconomics and microeconomics were her favorite subjects, and in her essays, she boldly combined the “theory of externalities” with her personal experiences—by comparing the views of two economists, she analyzed the “hidden impact of individual behavior on others,” ultimately arriving at her own understanding of the “economics major”: Just as when I dance hip-hop, the enthusiasm of the audience motivates me in return. Isn't this ‘two-way influence’ a form of ‘externalities’ at the societal level?"

This reflection on “interpreting life through a professional lens” is the highlight of the essay. “I didn't deliberately pile on achievements; I just wrote what I was truly thinking.” She said that another section that caught the admissions officers' attention was her description of her family. From accompanying her to pursue her interests, attend concerts, to supporting her during the application season by doing her nails and eating hot pot to alleviate anxiety, her parents' unconditional support became her “softest armor.” “What my parents taught me is that ‘sincerity is more important than perfection’—this is what I wanted to convey to the admissions officers through my writing.”

As she wrote in her essay: “Growth is not an isolated journey, but a network intertwined with countless people and events.” During her years at Farragut, the care and support from her homeroom teachers, Ms. Sun and Mr. Yuan, became warm nodes within this network. “They not only taught me knowledge but also guided me like family when I was confused. For instance, the uncertainty during eleventh-grade course selection and the self-doubt during the application period—it was this companionship that gave me the courage to be myself.” Evey has woven her gratitude for the two homeroom teachers into her reflection on growth.

Graduation message:

Find great meaning in “small moments.”

Standing at the crossroads of graduation, Evey’s heart is filled with gratitude for her time on campus. For her, the “little moments” she remembers might be the laughter during the first rehearsal of the street dance club, the moment she argued passionately for a point of view in economics class, the bottle of water a classmate handed her on the Halloween stage, the figure of Mr. Sun patiently explaining a problem after class, or the plate of fruit her mother quietly placed on the corner of the table… It is these fragments that piece together her “boundless” youth.

Evey, who loves traveling, says, “Traveling thousands of miles is better than reading thousands of books.”

“Thank you, Farragut, for giving me not a ‘standard answer,’ but a field where I can draw my own map,” Evey said.

Evey likes to try new things.

She likes to sketch whatever she likes, enjoys photography and skiing, and also likes playing the piano, guitar, and ukulele.
