The post immediately drew fierce criticism internationally, with many netizens urging him to study historical records before making such claims.

面对舆论压力，本田圭佑于次日（8月9日）公开修正立场。他在社交媒体上承认南京大屠杀真实存在，表示自己此前因缺乏了解而发表了错误言论。他写道："虽然我自以为懂历史，但还是一厢情愿地发表了评论。然而在详细研究一手资料后，我意识到这些事实与历史记录高度吻合。我错了。（谢谢大家给我再次学习的机会！）"

On Saturday, Honda retweeted his Friday post and corrected his stance: "Although I thought I knew about history, I made an optimistic comment. However, after researching primary sources in detail, I realized that the facts are almost in line with history. In this regard, I was mistaken. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to study again!"

为证明自己的转变，本田圭佑详细列出了他查阅的史料，包括日军士兵日记、军方内部文件、南京安全区国际委员会记录以及当时外国媒体的报道。他强调："这些历史文献并非战后创作，而是在战时就已存在，并且是来自多个国家、观点一致且独立的记录，因此具有很高的学术可靠性。"

"These historical materials were not fabricated after the war but have existed since immediately after the incident. Since independent records from multiple countries and perspectives corroborate each other, they hold high academic credibility," Honda wrote.

日本J-CAST新闻网报道称，尽管有人质疑本田是否能在一天内完成详尽调查，但多数网友仍赞赏他勇于纠正错误的态度。在中国社交媒体微博上，也有网友肯定本田知错能改的态度，但同时指出，像他这样愿意查阅史料并承认错误的日本民众实属罕见。
