Hawthorn fruit leather, made from the tart red hawthorn berry, is a classic dried fruit snack enjoyed in regions like Shandong, Shanxi, Hebei, Beijing, and Tianjin. With its signature sweet-and-sour flavor, this chewy treat is not just delicious—it’s also traditionally believed to aid digestion, stimulate the appetite, and quench thirst.
Hawthorn is a versatile fruit in Chinese cuisine. It can be candied into the famous tanghulu (sugar-coated hawthorn skewers), turned into hawthorn cakes and jams, or preserved as canned fruit. But few people know that hawthorn fruit leather has an unexpectedly dramatic origin tied to military history.
Legend has it that during the Qing Dynasty, hawthorn juice was boiled down and dried into thin sheets, which were then used to write secret military messages. Once the message was delivered and read, the recipient would simply eat the "paper"—leaving no trace behind. One poem from the time even praised this clever invention, noting that these edible dispatches could both protect military secrets and quench thirst on the battlefield.
