Elon Musk has refuted reports claiming he will soon step down from his role in the Trump administration, dismissing the news as "fake" in a post on X.

Musk, who was appointed as a special government employee to lead efforts in reducing federal spending and dismantling government agencies, took to X to respond to the speculation, writing simply, "Yeah, fake news." White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also dismissed the report as "garbage," reiterating that Musk will step down only after completing his mandate.

Earlier in the day, Politico reported that Trump told members of his Cabinet and close contacts that Musk will soon step down from his government role. The publication further added that the president and his billionaire ally decided in recent days that the latter would return to his businesses.

According to media reports, the transition is likely to correspond to the end of Musk's time as a "special government employee", a special status that temporarily exempts him from some ethics and conflict-of-interest rules. That 130-day period is expected to expire in late May or early June.
