美国联邦航空管理局证实，当地时间1月29日晚，“太平洋西南航空公司（PSA Airlines）”执飞的美国航空公司AA5342航班在接近里根国家机场跑道时与一架军用直升机在半空中相撞，客机坠河。有消息称，这是一架支线客机，机上有约60名乘客。
