该组照片源自在镇江英国租界旅居的商人J. G. W. Gearing的影集，其中便收录了几张扬州大明寺、天宁寺、观音山的照片，网络上似未曾出现过。
按照其所处的年代判断，照片时间大致为1860年代末至1880年代初这20年左右。
