The development of doctoral programmes in basic and emerging disciplines and in interdisciplinary fields will also be facilitated, as set forth in a set of guidelines on deepening the comprehensive reform of doctoral education recently unveiled by the general offices of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council on October 20.
The guidelines also say that the proportion of professional doctoral programs should be increased. They also pledge efforts to accelerate the construction of disciplines related to key fields, step up the integration of various disciplines, and explore new paths for international exchange and cooperation.
In September, the Ministry of Education has recently encouraged leading overseas universities, particularly those with a focus on science and engineering, to establish joint educational programmes with their counterparts in China. Additionally, China plans to provide support to top universities in expanding their educational capacities and to establish several advanced research universities. (By Ma Ziqian/China Youth Daily)
