L'Inverno (Allegro non molto)
Aggiacciato tremar trà nevi algenti
Al Severo Spirar d'orrido Vento,
Correr battendo i piedi ogni momento;

Trembling, frozen, in the icy snow
at the horrid wind's harsh breath;
running while constantly stamping one's feet;
and feeling the teeth chatter from the overwhelming cold.
From “Winter”, sonnet of the Four Seasons
On the afternoon of 29 April, with the melodious concerto soaring at the Edward Alleyn Theatre at Dulwich Zhuhai, theworld-renownedchamber orchestra“I MUSICI”graced the campus for an exceptional music workshop for the students and staff.
Coinciding with I MUSICI's performance of Vivaldi's Baroque classic “The Four Seasons” at the Zhuhai Huafa & CPAA Grand Theatre, Dulwich Zhuhai, with the support of the theatre, was privileged to invite I MUSICI to the school.
The World's Finest Chamber Orchestra
Founded in 1951, I MUSICI is an ensemble of 12 musicians. It was described by the famous Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini as “the best chamber ensemble in the world”.
They chose the simple, yet nice, name I MUSICI and they deliberately decided to shape the ensemble without a conductor. They did so in order to create an egalitarian relationship among the twelve colleagues and friends, which would bring to their music-making a unanimity on technical and interpretative questions.
The “Four Seasons” Through the Centuries
For music aficionados, the name of the I MUSICI is inextricably linked with Vivaldi’s violin concertos The Four Seasons.
It is hard to believe that a masterpiece like Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons was once rarely performed. In 1955, when I MUSICI entered the recording studio to produce the first stereophonic record of The Four Seasons, the music piece was almost unknown to the public. Upon its release, this album ignited a “Four Seasons” frenzy that swept through the global music scene, setting a sales record for classical records worldwide.
Their epochal significance has earned them the reputation of being quintessential interpreters and ambassadors of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. I MUSICI has surpassed 70 years of existence, navigating through several important decades in modern music history and becoming the only chamber orchestra to reach this milestone.
The “Winter” in Lombardy’s Mantua
During the event, I MUSICI presented "Winter" from The Four Seasons. The theatre was silent as they performed the most powerful movement. The audience held their breath and concentrated intently, as if in the frozen winter, when even the air seemed cold and thin.
In the Q&A session that followed the performance, a music student inquired, "How does Vivaldi ‘paint’ the four seasons through music in this work?"
One of the musicians from I MUSICI offered an inspiring explanation. “Actually, each movement describes a different scene. It’s less about listening and more about visualizing. For example, in ‘Winter’, you can imagine the rapid violin notes as raindrops of the season; while the cello’s performance is akin to the sound of logs crackling in a fireplace.”
In our minds, winter is often dry and cold. However, Vivaldi’s “Winter” is that of Mantua in Lombardy. This ancient city, surrounded by the lake, inspired him to compose a winter filled with sleet and the cozy warmth of a hearth. Through his music, audiences traverse two centuries to witness the seasonal transformations as seen through the eyes of this musical maestro.
Bach, Bach, and Still Bach
Following I MUSICI’s performance, the Dulwich Zhuhai’s Quartet took the stage: first violinist Bob G (Year 11), second violinist Enid H (Year 10), cellist Chloe J (Year 10), and keyboardist Felicia H (Year 11) presented Bach’s “Air on the G String”.
CJ.S Bach, a contemporary of Vivaldi, has been posthumously dubbed “the Father of Modern Music”. “Air on the G String” is among Bach’s most beloved compositions. In 1830, when Mendelssohn played this piece for Goethe on the piano, Goethe remarked, “It starts with such grandeur and elegance that one can envision a procession of dignitaries descending along an extensive staircase”.
In response to student's questions about the impact of Baroque music on later generations, the musician from I MUSICI stated that it evolves into different styles over time and across nations.
“What's important is that we can still detect echoes of Baroque music or classical influences in modern music pieces, such as in the works of some well-known 20th-century composers”.
When asked about their favourite Baroque composers besides Vivaldi, the musicians unanimously chose Bach, making the students feel grateful for the musical treasures left by these masters. These treasures enable us in the 21st-century digital age to enjoy a musical feast composed centuries ago.
Finally, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Huafa & CPAA Grand Theatre for their generous support of this activity, and express our sincere appreciation to the Italian chamber orchestra I MUSICI for their magnificent performance and insightful sharing. Their contributions have provided the students of Dulwich Zhuhai with an invaluable experience.
Dulwich Zhuhai will continue to integrate high-quality resources to provide additional opportunities for students to broaden their perspectives and explore various fields.
