光模块的使用温度分为三种：商用级温度、扩展级温度、工业级温度，而在实际的使用中是分为商用级温度和工业级温度两大类，它们有以下区别：
一、工作温度：-40℃至85℃
光模块的工作温度一般为-40℃至85℃之间，分为商业级和工业级范围1商温范围为0℃至70℃，工温范围为-40℃至85℃，属于商业级范围，室温为25℃时，光模块自身发热25℃都属于正常温度。因此，光模块的工作温度范围为-40℃至85℃。
二、工作环境：商用级的光模块一般使用在企业网、数据中心、机房等较为舒适的网络环境中，工业级光模块应用在比较恶劣环境中，工作温差比较大，比如偏远山区、隧道等。
三、测试方式：商用级光模块进行的是常温老化，温度在0～+70℃，工业级光模块需要进行高低温老化检测，温度最高能承受85度，在低于0℃的环境，模块都能稳定地工作。
四、温度补偿软件的导入：工业级光模块要导入温度补偿软件，其作用是用来保证光模块有稳定的工作电流供给，当温度发生改变时，温度补偿软件就会发生作用。而商业级光模块则不需要进行温度补偿，所以不会增加材料和制造成本。
