1872年达尔文发表了《电流影响下人类面部表情变化》的著作，震惊学术界。为了得到相关的实验数据，早在1862年达尔文就在法国通过电击甚至是休克治疗的方法研究人体面部的肌肉，被电击的志愿者面部在电流的刺激下变成了一幅幅鬼脸。而参与达尔文人类面部的情感表达实验的志愿者共有24位。
