刘涛在读高二时被南京军区文工团选中成为一名文艺兵。在当兵的三年时间里，刘涛每天都会刻苦训练努力学习，逐渐成为一名优秀的军人。2000年刘涛出演第一部电视剧《外来媳妇本地郎》进入娱乐圈，2003年出演古装琼瑶剧《还珠格格3》和金庸武侠剧《天龙八部》走红。
