1984年8月18日，北京首次绘成精确的长城地图，在此之前，北京地图一直未能准确、完整地标明整个长城的走向和分布情况。长城地图绘制完成后，北京长城的总长度、关口、城台以及整体的损毁状况在地图上一目了然。
与此同时，对长城的保护工作也被提上日程。
