据考查，薯条的真正来源地是比利时。在不同的国家薯条其实有不同的叫法，在北美一般简称为fries, 在英国等国家则习惯称为chips ，在印度被称为finger chips或者 French-fried potatoes。但重点是French fries和法国并没有什么关系。
但为什么会被称为French fries呢？
关于名称的由来有很多说法。
第一种说法是说薯条的形状做法与法国有关，被称为“法式”（Frenched）做法，法国人习惯将土豆切成长细条状，并且油炸。而一开始这种食物被称为French fried potatoes，后来菜单上为了方便打印，就简化成French fries，而人们也叫得更顺口些。
另一种说法则是与一战有关。在第一次世界大战期间，美国士兵在比利时吃到了这种食物，觉得特别美味，而当时比利时军队的通用语言是法语，于是就被误以为是法国食物，称为French fries。
