Today I want to retell a piece of health news in my own words, and the point of retelling is fluency, not fancy words. The headline is simple: more than one billion people in the world now live with obesity. I keep saying it over until it comes out smooth: one in eight people, roughly, and the number has more than doubled in adults since 1990. The part that trips me is the change, not the number. I keep wanting to say "it doubled two times", but the clean way is it has more than doubled, and for children it is it has quadrupled. Once I pin that word down, the whole sentence stops wobbling.
And then a small thought sidetracks me, which is honestly the best part of self-talk. I think of breakfast back home. A bowl of Lanzhou beef noodles, heavy on the noodles and the salt, light on the meat and the greens. Carb-heavy, that is the phrase. But back home we never cut the carbs, we balance them, because Liangzhou is a noodle heaven. The local answer is 三套车, noodles plus meat plus a cup of tea to clear the palate. That is the whole lesson, actually: you do not ban the carbs, you balance them.
And there is the other half of the fix, the one everyone already knows but nobody loves to hear: move. I used to think exercise meant dragging myself onto a treadmill, until I found Animal Flow, a bodyweight system of bear crawls and crab walks that turns movement into a kind of ground dance. That is the honest trick, really: the movement that sticks is the one you look forward to, not the one you force.
The grammar I want to lock in today is all about how we describe a change in size.
• The rate rose from 8.8% to 18.5%. A clean from-to line, nothing fancy.
• It has more than doubled since 1990. Use the present perfect because the change is still with us, not a finished past event.
• It has quadrupled. Four times. For children the figure went from 1.7% to 6.9%, which is just about fourfold.
Three ways to say "翻倍" that do not all mean the same thing, so be careful: doubled is twice, tripled is three times, quadrupled is four times. Do not reach for "increased four times" when you mean quadrupled, it can be read as four separate increases. For a softer touch, more than doubled means a bit over twice, and that is the exact phrase the study uses for adults.
• "people are more and more fat" is how my brain wants to say it, but fat as an adjective sounds blunt and clinical. Say obesity is on the rise or more people are living with obesity.
• fat vs obese: being fat is a description, obesity is the medical condition, defined in adults as a body mass index of 30 or above. Keep the two apart.
• overweight vs obese: overweight starts at a BMI of 25, obese at 30. An overweight person is not automatically obese.
• "the number of obese people are rising" is wrong: the number of takes a singular verb. The number of people living with obesity is rising, but a number of people are... takes plural.
For "上升" when you retell a news chart, rotate through these so you do not repeat yourself:
• rise / climb / go up(平实)
• surge / shoot up(快速)
• more than double(翻倍多)
• quadruple(翻四倍)
• creep up(缓慢爬升)
For the people themselves, instead of always saying "obese people": people living with obesity, those who are clinically obese, people affected by obesity. The first one, living with, is the kinder, more current phrasing, and it makes your Part 3 answer sound mature.
Eight words for talking about weight and health, each with a line I can actually say:
• obesity oʊˈbiːsəti — 肥胖症。Obesity is now the most common form of malnutrition.
The prevalence of obesity has doubled.
Obesity has become a global epidemic.
Obesity is itself a form of malnutrition. 词根 mal-(坏)+ nutrire(滋养)。
• sedentary ˈsednteri — 久坐的。A sedentary life raises the risk. 词根 sedere(坐,拉丁)。
Adults with a BMI of 30 or above are classed as obese.
The age-standardised rate lets us compare countries fairly.
A carb-heavy breakfast spikes your blood sugar.
Three frames for retelling any health finding fluently:
• According to a study in The Lancet, ... The single most useful opener for news retelling. According to a study in The Lancet, more than a billion people now live with obesity.
• The figure rose from A to B. The from-to skeleton. The figure for adult women rose from 8.8% to 18.5%.
• X has more than doubled / quadrupled since Y. The change-with-time frame. Childhood obesity has quadrupled since 1990.
Once you have these three, you can retell almost any public-health story without freezing.
⭐ ⭐ 今日表达 TOP3(流利向)
Three phrases that make a health answer sound native, not textbook:
1. put on weight — 增重。People are putting on weight because processed food is everywhere.
2. a growing body of evidence — 越来越多的证据。A growing body of evidence links sleep to weight.
3. the tip of the iceberg — 冰山一角。The number on the scale is just the tip of the iceberg.
• heavy — rich and filling, not just weighty. A heavy meal is a big, rich plate, and you will meet this sense constantly on a health topic.
• gain — gain weight(增重)and gain ground(取得进展)both come in handy.
• weight — carry weight means to have influence.
• scale — step on the scale(上秤称重)and on a global scale(在全球范围),one word, two lives.
• diet — A balanced diet is your everyday eating, while go on a diet is the restriction.
注意:diet hides two meanings, and telling them apart is a fluency skill, the article and the collocation do the job.
Here is the science in plain English, because retelling a news story means understanding what is behind it.
Obesity is measured, in adults, by the body mass index, your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres. A BMI of 30 or above counts as obese. It is an imperfect ruler, it cannot see how much of you is muscle and how much is fat, but it is simple enough to use across two hundred countries, and that comparability is its whole value.
In 2024 a team called the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, working with the World Health Organization, published a study in The Lancet covering 1990 to 2022. They pooled the measured heights and weights of more than 220 million people aged five and over, from more than 190 countries. What they found changed how we talk about the problem. In 2022 more than one billion people lived with obesity, roughly one in eight. Among adults the age-standardised rate rose from 8.8% to 18.5% in women, and from 4.8% to 14.0% in men, meaning adults more than doubled and men almost tripled. Among children and teenagers the rate roughly quadrupled, from 1.7% to 6.9% in girls and 2.1% to 9.3% in boys.
The quiet headline is this: obesity has overtaken underweight as the most common form of malnutrition in most countries. Malnutrition, notice, runs both ways. Too little and too much can exist side by side, even in the same household, which researchers call the double burden of malnutrition. The rise is fastest where diets have shifted quickly toward processed food and away from movement. So the fix is rarely a single food ban. It is rebalancing, moving more, eating more whole food, and starting early.
The second half of that fix deserves its own sentence. Moving more does not have to mean punishing yourself in a gym. A bodyweight system like Animal Flow, created in 2015, turns bear crawls and crab walks into a ground dance, and people who hate gyms often love it precisely because it feels like play. Some call it the Western Five Animal Frolics, 西方五禽戏, the same idea Hua Tuo had two thousand years ago, only on all fours. The body remembers the oldest movements, and it repays you the moment you give them back.
The word remembers what caused the condition.

Stand on 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山)and the whole story lands in one glance. Liangzhou, what we now call Wuwei, has always fed itself by the land's own logic. The old saying runs 凉州之畜为天下饶, the livestock of Liangzhou ranks first under heaven, and for centuries the diet here leaned on meat, dairy and coarse grain rather than on endless refined flour. People moved a lot, by cart, by horse, by foot, and ate food that came straight off the land. 李自标 grew up at the foot of this very mountain before he sailed off to Naples to study, and a childhood lived close to fields and walking trails leaves a different body than a childhood lived on a sofa.
Which brings me back to that bowl. A bowl of Lanzhou beef noodles, heavy on the noodles and the salt, light on the meat and the greens, is a carb-heavy start to the day. But nobody back home would call that the whole story, because Liangzhou is a city of noodles, a noodle heaven, and its people never cut the carbs, they balance them. The local emblem is 凉州三套车, the three-cart set: a bowl of hand-pulled noodles dressed in a rich braising gravy, a plate of pork slow-braised in an aged family master stock, golden and tender, and a cup of sweet tea brewed from red dates, longan and rock sugar that locals fondly call 凉州土咖啡, Liangzhou’s own coffee. Carb, protein and a palate-cleansing drink in a single meal. Even an imported noodle bowl gets a local rewrite, 肉托面, the meat cradling the noodles instead of hiding behind them. The protein is no afterthought either: the lamb of Minqin, light on the gamey smell and high in protein; the white yak of Tianzhu, lean and low in fat; the free-range chicken of Gulang.
And the pork here is not just food, it is old memory. The very emperor who gave Liangzhou its name and founded the Wuwei commandery was, by legend, nicknamed 彘, the old word for pig. Even the pork is ancient here: a wild boar’s trotter, unearthed from a Han-dynasty beacon tower in the Hexi Corridor and carbon-dated to the Han era, shows people were eating pig’s trotters two thousand years ago. The pig survives as art too: 武威市博物馆藏着一件唐代石猪,人称「唐小猪」,憨态可掬,出自吐谷浑慕容氏王族墓群,是弘化公主那条线的实物。A tiny white-marble piglet, six and a half centimetres long, buried with a royal clan a thousand years ago, still looks ready to run. Pork also runs through the festivals here: 腊肉夹儿, braised meat tucked into a steamed bun, Liangzhou’s own sandwich; 糟肉, pork belly steamed with fermented bean curd, a New Year staple; and 凉州烩菜, a big pot of pork, cabbage and tofu that means a full table and a full year. 凉州之畜为天下饶 is not a boast, it is an inventory. So the lesson is not to ban the carbs, but to balance them, good carbs, good protein, light cooking. That is the quiet nutrition wisdom of home: 武威人不是不吃碳水,而是像凉州三套车那样荤素搭配。The global obesity story and a single breakfast bowl meet in the same sentence: eat a little less of the cheap refined stuff, a little more whole grain and real protein, and move like the mountain people who came before us. Or move like the animals: lately I have been falling for Animal Flow, a bodyweight system of bear crawls and crab walks that some call the Western Five Animal Frolics, 西方五禽戏其实就是“动物流”, the very idea Hua Tuo worked out two thousand years ago, just moved from two legs to four. And behind the braising there is one more quiet lesson, for 卤, the character for braising, sounds just like 禄, the word for blessing, so a pot of braised pork is not only food but a wish.
• edere / es-(吃):obese(被吃胖)、edible(可吃的)、edacity(贪吃)。
• valere(强):prevalence(占上风→流行)、valid(有效的)、value(价值)、avail(有用)。
• sedere(坐):sedentary(久坐的)、session(一段会议)、resident(居民,住下不走)。
• demos(人群):epidemic(在人群之上的)、pandemic(大流行的,pan- 全 + demos 人群)、demographic(人口统计的)。
Today is a health day, so I pull back the health words from the last two weeks and say them once more out loud.
Repeating is where fluency lives.

Quick fire, no thinking time, answer each in one breath:
• Do you eat a big breakfast? Not really. I used to grab something carb-heavy on the way, but now I try to keep it lighter.
• What is your favourite food? A bowl of Lanzhou beef noodles, honestly, but the version back home where the meat does the holding, meat-forward and noodle-light.
• Do you think you eat healthily? Mostly. I have cut down on sugar, and I try to eat more whole food, but I still reach for noodles more than I should.
• Is it easy to eat healthily where you live? Easier than before. The trick is rebalancing, not banning, so you keep the things you love but change the ratio.
• Do you like exercise? Not the gym kind. But I have been getting into Animal Flow, bodyweight moves on all fours, and that actually feels like play rather than punishment.
• obesity → /oʊˈbiːsəti/。Stress the second syllable, and the first o is oʊ, not ɒ. obese is oʊˈbiːs, ending on a clean /s/.
• prevalence → /ˈprevələns/。Stress the first syllable, and let the middle e weaken to ə.
• epidemic → /ˌepɪˈdemɪk/。The main stress sits on dem, keep the opening epi light.
• quadrupled → /ˈkwɒdruːpld/。This one trips people, slow it down at first, quad-ru-pled, then speed up.

One idea, four languages, the same sentence: health is the greatest wealth.
Good health is the greatest wealth.
That last English line is the one I want to keep, because it says in six words what the whole billion-person study takes a hundred pages to say.
(Task 1)
![]()
Task 1 写作任务(150 词 / 20 分钟):The chart below shows the global age-standardised prevalence of obesity in 1990 and 2022, for adult women, adult men, girls aged 5 to 19, and boys aged 5 to 19. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
• The proportion of adult women classified as obese more than doubled, from 8.8% in 1990 to 18.5% in 2022.
• Among adult men, the rate almost tripled, rising from 4.8% to 14.0%.
• Obesity among children and adolescents grew fastest, roughly quadrupling for both sexes over the same period.
Here is the news item I retell today, in my own words, then I name the source.
A study published in The Lancet in 2024, led by the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration together with the World Health Organization, says more than one billion people around the world now live with obesity, roughly one in eight. The number has more than doubled among adults since 1990 and quadrupled among children and teenagers. In 2022, about 879 million adults and 159 million children were affected. Obesity has now overtaken underweight as the most common form of malnutrition in most countries. The researchers say the rise is fastest where diets have shifted quickly toward processed food and away from physical activity, and they call for prevention through diet, movement and proper care, starting in early life.
Source: NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC) and World Health Organization, worldwide trends in underweight and obesity from 1990 to 2022, published in The Lancet, 2024.
