UNNC student wins gold for turning waste into sustainable construction materials
A final-year Civil Engineering undergraduate at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) has won gold in the Open Category of the Concrete Panel Competition 2026, organised by the American Concrete Institute Singapore Chapter, for developing high-performance concrete using agricultural and industrial waste.
Jiang Chang joined a research and development team from Ningbo Transportation Engineering Construction Group, producing a 20mm-thick concrete panel in which waste materials, including glass and rice husk ash, accounted for 48% of the total mass. The innovation demonstrates the potential to reduce raw material costs while advancing more sustainable construction practices.
“Through this competition, I experienced the entire process, from applying classroom knowledge to designing experimental plans to producing samples, conducting tests and continuously refining our approach,” Jiang said.
The opportunity was facilitated by Professor Juan Wang of UNNC’s Department of Civil Engineering, whose introduction enabled Jiang to work alongside industry professionals and apply his academic knowledge to a real-world engineering project.
“UNNC actively expands its partnerships with industry, bringing real engineering projects and industry needs into student education. This helps students apply classroom knowledge to practical engineering challenges while developing their professional skills and innovative thinking through hands-on experience,” Professor Wang said.
This achievement reflects UNNC’s distinctive approach to education, which combines academic excellence with practical experience and industry collaboration. By connecting classroom learning with real-world challenges, the University empowers students to turn knowledge into innovation and develop the skills to make a meaningful impact in their chosen fields.
