This morning the coffee machine groaned the way my brain does before the first sentence of the day, and I opened a World Bank table instead of the news. The number that stopped me: worldwide, in 2024, services employed just over half of all workers, while farms and factories shared the other half almost evenly. I have read that kind of table a hundred times, but today the question that came up was not the number itself. It was whether I actually understand it, or only recognise it.

Metacognition, the word itself, is knowing about knowing, meta meaning beyond, cognoscere to get to know. And the first thing it teaches you about a chart is suspicion. A pie that says services are fifty per cent of work does not tell you who is unemployed, who is informally employed with no contract, who works two hours when they want eight. The figure is a standing point, status in Latin, not the whole ground. This is the part of English I still fumble: I can name the three sectors, but explaining out loud, in one breath, what the chart hides, that is where my fluency thins.

The word metacognition came home today because it is the same one I first met on 09-18 inside a piece about reviewing my own work, and it has been circling back ever since. That day the angle was self-review at the desk; today it has moved out to the chart, the same muscle asked to police a different object. Knowing about knowing should be portable, or it is not really knowing yet.

So today I will treat the chart as a trap to defuse. The largest slice, services, at 50.3 per cent. Agriculture 26.1, industry 23.6. Simple to say. The harder sentence is the one after: yet these shares are proportions, not headcounts, so a small-rate region can still hold a vast number of people, and the pie quietly leaves out everyone without a job at all. My loss this week, if I had to score it, sits in exactly that gap, between reciting and really seeing.

There is one word on today's list that shames me a little. Precarious. I have read it dozens of times, zero-hour contracts, precarious work, and I can translate it in my head without blinking, But when I tried to say it aloud this morning it came out wrong twice, the stress landing on the first syllable, PRE-carious, when it belongs on the second, pre-CA-rious. And I caught myself, mid-sentence, about to say "I very like this job", which is not English at all, it is Chinese wearing English clothes. So the loss today is not vocabulary size. I have plenty of words I can recognise and almost none I can fire on demand, and that gap, between recognising and firing, is exactly what metacognition is for.

I keep a notebook of words I only half own, and every Friday I test which ones I can actually use versus which ones I merely recognise. That test is the whole point of this practice. Use it or lose it, and the same goes for understanding.

There is a job I almost had and did not, and it is the reason this notebook exists at all. Back when I was still a student, I took a summer job as a part-time waiter at Haidilao, the hotpot chain founded in 1994 in Jianyang, Sichuan, by Zhang Yong, which grew from a single small shop into stores across China and a string of overseas markets. A company like that sends its best hands abroad to run its overseas stores, and the road to an外派, an overseas posting, was open to me if my English could carry a shift. It could not. I could take an order, smile, refill the pot, but the moment a foreign guest asked a question, or a manager floated the idea of sending me to a store overseas, my mouth locked. So the slice of the pie I actually wanted, services with a passport, stayed out of reach, and what I wanted was not a different job but a different version of the same job, one where my hands and my English could move together. That gap, between the work I could do and the work I could reach, is what metacognition keeps naming for me: you do not lack the skill, you lack the second skill that unlocks the first.

And lately that gap has sent me back to a harder question, not about English but about the kind of work worth a life. I have spent years writing about Liangzhou, essays and 《凉州学论之我见》 that explain why a place mattered, and explaining value is real work, but it is not the same as creating it. A reader may understand Liangzhou better because of a sentence I wrote, and that is something, yet no one eats warmer, or gets a cleaner cut, or finds a next job, because of it. The work that creates value with hands, a trade you can carry anywhere, keeps pulling at me, and hairdressing is the one I keep coming back to: a chair, a mirror, a pair of scissors, and a stranger who walks out feeling more like themselves. It is the services sector at its most literal, one person serving another, and the English to run that chair overseas is exactly the second skill I lacked at the hotpot counter.

There is something honest in admitting that scholarship, for all its reach, can become a way of standing beside life and describing it, while a craft forces you inside it. A barber in a foreign city serves people who never read a word of Liangzhou, and is served by them in return; that exchange, face to face, in a language not your first, is a kind of value the essay cannot manufacture. So the plan forming in me is not to abandon the writing but to add a pair of hands to it, to spend the next years learning a craft well enough that the world, not only the page, becomes my workplace. Services with a passport, I called it earlier today; I am beginning to mean it as a life, not a line.

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects." Robert A. Heinlein, Time Enough for Love.

Heinlein wrote that in 1973, and it lands on me today like a verdict. The list is absurd and also exactly the point: a full person is not one skill on legs but a net of skills, each one a door to a different room of the world. Writing Liangzhou is one door; a pair of scissors and a chair overseas is another; the English to walk through both is the hinge.

And the list is not metaphor. The trades that actually let a person cross borders are blunt and concrete: carpenter, mason, rebar hand, scaffolder, plumber and electrician, welder, painter, the operator of a tower crane or an excavator or a loader. Any one of them can be packed onto a plane to a site overseas, and the only thing that turns a domestic hand into an international one is the language spoken on that site. I learned that at the hotpot counter; the building trades learn it on the scaffold and at the welding joint. The skill is in the hands; the door is in the mouth.

And then there is the food, which is the trade I keep quietly wanting to take overseas. Not the chain kind, the Liangzhou kind: 凉州面皮子, the cold skin noodles cut and drenched in chili oil; 凉州菜锅子, the vegetable pot that feeds a table from one simmer; 凉州三套车, the three-on-a-plate combo of noodles, tea and cured meat that is Liangzhou in a single meal. A stall selling those abroad is the services sector with a passport of its own, and it carries Liangzhou into the world not as an essay someone reads but as a bowl someone eats. The wall, again, is the language: take the order, name the dish, tell the story of where it comes from, in a tongue that is not mine yet.

One grammar trap hides inside today's chart talk, and it is a genuine IELTS pitfall: what-clauses and proportion words as subjects take a singular verb.

• What the chart hides is who is left out.

• The proportion of workers in services was 50.3 per cent. (proportion 单数,用 was,别被后面 workers 带成 were)

• These shares are proportions, not headcounts.

The trick is to find the real subject before choosing the verb. A proportion, a percentage, a share all stand alone as singular; only the actual plural noun earns are.

Today's chart also gives me a reason to drill three more patterns that keep Task 1 honest.

• Passive for facts: Services accounted for 50.3 per cent, while the remaining two sectors were shared almost evenly.

• Whereas for clean contrast: Whereas agriculture held 26.1 per cent, industry slipped to 23.6. (whereas

• Dangling participle warning: Employed in services, the chart shows half of all workers ✘ → Half of all workers were employed in services ✔ (分词短语的逻辑主语必须与主句主语一致,chart 不会 employed)

• Respectively: Agriculture and industry accounted for 26.1 and 23.6 per cent respectively.

What the figure does not show is ...(读图元认知句,先点出被漏掉的部分再描述,Task 1 收尾也好用)

例:What the figure does not show is the millions who wanted work but could not find it.

The steeper the gradient, the faster the rate of change.(2026-10-15 交通期学的 the + 比较级结构,今天换到读图语境:服务业占比越爬越高,变化率越大)

例:The steeper the climb of the services slice over the decades, the faster the rate at which farms lost workers.

A significant proportion of workers were employed in services, while only a minority worked in agriculture.(用 proportion / minority 替 a lot of / a few,分数阶书面味更足)

Labour statistics are a quiet lesson in metacognition, because a single number about work almost always hides more than it shows. Take the sector split above: in 2024 the world's workforce was half services, a quarter agriculture and a quarter industry. Clean as that pie looks, it silently leaves out everyone who wanted a job but could not find one, everyone in informal work with no contract, and everyone working far fewer hours than they would like. To read a chart honestly is to ask what it omits, and that asking is exactly metacognition, knowing the edge of what you know. A number is a standing point, status in Latin, not the whole ground.

There is also a long story behind the shape of this pie. Economists call it structural transformation: as a country develops, labour slides out of fields and into factories first, then out of factories and into offices, shops and screens. The pattern is so regular that development economists treat it almost as a law. China shows it at speed: in 2000 half its workforce still farmed, while services sat at a quarter; by 2011 services had edged past agriculture, 35.7 against 34.8 per cent, and by 2024 services had climbed to about 46 per cent while farming had fallen below 23 (World Bank, modelled ILO estimate). The same pie in 1950, 1990 and 2024 would look like three different countries, which is why knowing the trend stops you mistaking a snapshot for a destiny.

The second thing this pie hides is the quality of the work inside each slice. A services job can be a contract worth signing or a shift with no contract at all; economists call the second kind informal employment, and in many low-income economies it is the majority rather than the exception. The gig economy, delivery riders, drivers, freelancers on short platforms, sits in this grey zone too, and it is where today's word precarious earns its keep: flexible on paper, insecure in practice. So when the chart says services are 50.3 per cent, the honest reader asks a second question, not only what is missing but what kind of work sits inside.

A third wrinkle is the word employment itself, which in these tables does not mean what a layman hears. The ILO counts someone as employed if they did at least one hour of paid work in the reference week, or ran a business or produced goods for the market; the bar is low, and it is why the figure can stay high even when people are hungry. The employment-to-population ratio, the share of working-age people actually in work, is the steadier companion to the unemployment rate, and the sector shares above are built on top of that thin definition. Read metacognitively, every clean number in a labour report is a decision about where to draw the line, and the line is almost always drawn to flatter the headline.

• workforce: the total number of people available for work.

• informal (economy): work without formal contracts or social protection.

• underemployment: people working less than they wish or below their skill.

• omit: to leave out. 点拨:读图第一问就是 what does it omit。

• secure / security: free from worry or risk.

• structural transformation: the long-run shift of labour from agriculture to industry and then to services.

• precarious: insecure, likely to change or disappear at any time.

• redundancy (BrE): no longer employed because the job no longer exists. 点拨:英式 made redundant,美式 laid off。

词源小知识:statistic 来自拉丁 status(站立、状态,同 state / stationary / constant);sector 来自 secare(切,同 section / segment);informal 来自 in- 加 forma(无定形);metacognition 来自 meta-(超越)加 cognoscere(知晓,同 cognitive / recognise);redundant 来自 redundare(泛滥,red- 回 + unda 浪)。

One root pulls a whole net today, and it is the one behind the word that keeps circling back this week. Meta-, Greek for beyond or after, gives us metacognition, of course, but also metaphor, which carries meaning beyond the literal, metadata, data about data, metamorphosis, a change beyond the form, and even metropolis, a mother city set beyond the others. To know beyond knowing is the oldest trick in learning.

The second net is stat, Latin for to stand: statistic, status, state, stationary, constant and the statistician all share the idea of a fixed standing point, which is exactly why a single statistic can fool you into thinking the ground is solid when it is only one point on it. meta- 这串(metacognition / metaphor / metadata / metropolis)今天正好把元认知这一族一次拎清;stat 这串(statistic / status / state / constant)则服务那张饼图,一个「站住的点」不等于整片地,这正是读图要警惕的。

The third net is labor, Latin for work, which gives us labour itself, collaborate, to work together, elaborate, worked out with great care, and laborious, full of hard toil. And a fourth hides in plain sight: operari, to work, inside operate, cooperation, opera, a work of art, and even office, the room where the work happens (officium, opus + facere).

Old knowledge resurfacing today, four callbacks, each one a word or a warning I met before and need to keep alive.

From 2026-09-18 工作, metacognition itself, meta plus cognoscere, knowing about knowing. That day I met it inside a piece on reviewing my own work; today it returns in a different shape, asked to police a chart instead of a paragraph. A word that has come home to roost.

From 2026-10-15 交通, a share is not cash. The bus-mode figures were shares of trips, not passenger headcounts, and today's pie is the same warning in another shape, proportions are not people.

From 2026-09-24 工作, services' share across seven economies showed a mean pulled slightly down by one low outlier, China at 46.4 per cent. That taught me the median is steadier than the mean, a lesson sitting right next to today's 50.3 per cent services slice.

From 2026-09-14 环境, the truncated-axis line chart taught me to distrust a chart that does not start at zero. A pie has no axis to truncate, but it still hides by omission what it never drew.

And from 2026-09-30 数学, the polysemy drill on mean, mode and sample, each word wearing two or three faces depending on the sentence, which is exactly why today I still stop and ask which sense a word is wearing before I let it out of my mouth.

Ammo, not scripts. Three Part 1 style questions from the current pool, keywords only:

• What do you do? → write and research / run a tiny studio / more a history person than a nine-to-five / self-employed

• Do you enjoy your work? → yes, the topic never gets old / some admin drains me / autonomy is the part I guard

• Would you like to do the same job in ten years? → probably evolve / want leverage over hours / IP over a timesheet

• What's the most common job in your country? → services, by a wide margin / retail, hospitality, admin, logistics

• Is it easy to find work where you live? → depends on the sector / tourism is seasonal / connections still matter

Part 2 cue card(60 秒):Describe a job you would like to try for a month. You should say what it is, why it appeals to you, what skills it needs, and whether you would actually do it full time.

Keywords(拿「国际展会口译」练):interpreter at a trade fair / eavesdrop / jargon / stall / negotiate / nerve / bridge two languages / services sector in its oldest human form.

Three small drills, because naturalness lives in the mouth as much as in word choice.

• Stress: precarious.

• Linking: land a job.

• Confusable pair: salary ˈsæləri 与 celery ˈseləri. 母语音标 ˈsæləri → 国际IPA ˈsæl.ər.i.

• Weak form: for. 母语音标 fɔː → 国际IPA fə 在弱位. a job for a year 里 for 不重读,读成 /fə/,别咬成重读 /fɔː/,否则句子节奏立刻卡。

• Stress: entrepreneur ˌɒntrəprəˈnɜː.

Three short sentences to close the loop, the Latin one pure metacognition. Scio me nihil scire, I know that I know nothing, Socrates' line on the limits of one's own knowledge, the purest five-word statement of metacognition there is. The Spanish is Más vale maña que fuerza, skill beats brute force, a line about working smarter, not just harder. And the French, Petit à petit, l'oiseau fait son nid, little by little the bird builds its nest, the patience proverb for any ten-year craft, hairdressing, English, or otherwise. All three are short enough to say three times before bed.

Task 1(150 词,20 分钟):The pie chart shows how the world's workforce was distributed across three economic sectors, agriculture, industry and services, in 2024. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

• The largest slice was held by the services sector at just over a half, 50.3 per cent.

• Agriculture and industry accounted for 26.1 per cent and 23.6 per cent respectively.

• Together, the two goods-producing sectors made up less than half of total employment.

• The remaining two sectors, by contrast, were far more evenly matched, differing by less than three percentage points.

• Overall, services dominated global work, while primary and secondary industry split the remainder almost evenly.

• It is worth noting that the chart measures shares of employment, not absolute numbers of workers.

• 常见失分:把占比说成人数(half of the world's people work in services ✘)、漏 overview、时态误用现在时描述 2024。

The pie chart breaks down global employment in 2024 into three sectors: services, agriculture and industry. Overall, services clearly dominated, accounting for just over half of all jobs, while the two goods-producing sectors split the remainder almost evenly.

Services held the largest share at 50.3 per cent, meaning the tertiary sector alone employed more workers than agriculture and industry combined. This reflects the long global shift of labour away from primary production, a pattern economists call structural transformation.

Agriculture and industry were far more evenly matched, at 26.1 and 23.6 per cent respectively, a gap of under three percentage points. Together they accounted for roughly half of employment, with agriculture marginally larger. It is worth noting, however, that these figures measure shares of jobs, not absolute numbers of workers, and they omit the unemployed, the underemployed and those in informal work, so the pie is cleaner than the reality it represents.

Pie charts show parts of a whole, and the first thing to check is whether the slices sum to 100. This one has only three, services clearly the biggest, so the human eye copes, but with five or more slices people compare angles badly and a bar chart would read more honestly.

The chart above measures the world's work by where it happens, farms, factories or offices. Ancient Liangzhou, today's Wuwei, would have shown a pie with almost nothing but the first slice. The Book of Han records that the livestock of Liangzhou made it the richest land in the realm, 凉州之畜为天下饶, and a land built on herds is a land where nearly everyone's work was agriculture and herding. Standing on 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山) today you can still see fields and flocks at its foot, the old primary-sector life holding on, and people still live there the way they always have.

And the mountain has already produced one worker whose whole trade was the third slice in its oldest, most human form. 李自标(1760-1828), a Liangzhou man who grew up under this same 凉州莲花山(姑臧紫山), left as a young man to study far away in Naples and came back to serve as an interpreter for the British embassy that reached China in 1793. His working life was services before the word had a slice: one person's knowledge, carried across languages and borders, doing what a herder's hands could not. 姑臧卧龙城 was built on herds; the same ground later produced a translator. The slice of the pie does not change the person, only the shape of the work.

Zoom from that mountain out to the whole nation, and China repeats the pattern at full scale. The services sector has become the country's single largest employer, taking close to 45.8 per cent of the workforce in 2023 and about 46 per cent in 2024, ahead of both farming and factories, and it keeps opening new posts every year. 服务业已成为我国吸纳就业最多的产业,提供了大量就业岗位, and the figure backs it up. The drift had been slow for decades and then sharp: in 2000 half of China still farmed, while services sat at a quarter; by 2011 services had edged past agriculture, 35.7 against 34.8 per cent, and the line has not crossed back since (World Bank, modelled ILO estimate). That national arc of labour, from fields toward offices, screens and storefronts, is the macro edition of what Wuwei is attempting on its own, the same slice of the pie quietly growing.

What changed is not the mountain but the maths of work. As economies develop, labour slides from fields to services, and the question of whether you feel secure in that move is exactly the metacognitive one. Wuwei, 武威古称凉州, now pushes its own shift, building cultural tourism and the logistics, people-flow and capital-flow loop that turns local melons and ginseng fruit into sold goods and arriving visitors. A herder's day and a guide's day are both work, just different slices of the same pie. The mountain asks the same of both: know your ground before you call it yours.

And this is not a new thought for me; it is the one I wrote into《凉州学论》itself. 凉州学不独在简册,亦在乡党之记忆,and those whose home register is 武威 yet whose lives are spent abroad deserve the closest heed, for they carry the cross-cultural eye of 李自标 and see Liangzhou differently from outside. I called it the cultural-enclave effect, 文化飞地, and the prescription wrote itself: urge the sons and daughters of Wuwei to travel far, let 凉州文脉 spread not by staying put but by going international, let 凉州学 converse with speakers of other tongues, 异邦殊语者, until it becomes an international显学. 前人栽树,后人乘凉, forebears plant the tree and descendants take the shade. The English I am drilling this morning is a seed of that same tree; the hotpot counter I could not cross, the chair and scissors I mean to learn, the bowl of 面皮子 I want to serve abroad, are its first leaves.
