贾岛（779—843年），字阆仙，一作浪仙，号碣石山人，范阳（今河北涿州）人，唐代诗人，后世称“诗奴”。其与同时代诗人孟郊齐名，二人诗风被称为“郊寒岛瘦”。
今天我们来赏读他的一首代表作：
《雨夜寄马戴》

芳林杏花树，花落子西东。
今夕曲江雨，寒催朔北风。
乡书沧海绝，隐路翠微通。
寂寂相思际，孤釭残漏中。
贾岛这首怀友五律，借雨夜曲江之景寄思马戴。芳林杏花零落，寒雨催起朔风，清冷景物铺就怅惘底色。山海迢遥，音书断绝，唯有青山幽径遥通故人。孤灯映残漏，万籁俱寂，相思悄然漫起。全诗炼字简淡，情景相融，尽显晚唐苦吟诗幽寂深沉的韵味。
截至目前还没有此诗的英译版本问世，笔者有幸首次英译此诗，助力贾岛的佳作文化出海。
To Ma Dai on a Rainy Night

The apricot trees in the fragrant groveshed
Their blossoms east and west by winds widespread.
Tonight on River Qu the rain falls chill,
Hastening the north wind from the far northhill.
No missive o’er thevast sea finds its way;
The hermit’s pathwinds through green hills to thee.
In this lone hour of longing, deep andstill,
One flickering lamp, the water-clock's slowdrill.
本译诗题规范`To Ma Dai on a Rainy Night`，英语古典诗歌题目的经典写法。
韵式工整：八行采用 ABAB 交叉韵（shed/chill；spread/hill；sea/still；thee/drill），英式传统十四行、八行诗常用韵式，韵律层次更丰富，不是简单双行韵，读来跌宕，更贴合五律起伏感；
语义完全贴合贾岛原诗，无增意象。`boundless sea`写沧海，开阔；`to thee`指向友人马戴，把 “隐路翠微通” 解读为幽径通向你，扣住怀人主旨。`flickeringlamp` 孤釭摇曳，画面感极强；`water-clock's slow drill`，`drill`取持续点滴、不停叩击之意，漏壶残滴，以动态写夜深，极有诗感。
句式节奏：每行接近抑扬五音步，贴近英诗经典格律，庄重隽永，传世感较强。
