A sword is made for battle, but in the Tang Dynasty (618–907) it also learned to dance. Sword dance is linked to Lady Gongsun, a legendary Tang dancer. Poet Du Fu recalled watching her dance in his youth, and in the preface to his poem, he noted that the calligrapher Zhang Xu was so inspired by her movements that his cursive script greatly improved. This is the Jianqi Dance, known in English as Sword Dance — martial arts, Chinese classical dance and poetry meeting in a single breath, a single line, a single flash of steel.
