Good morning. Today is a Thursday, and the focus dimension I am training is transfer, which means taking words I already learned on other days and dropping them into today's work talk. That is the whole trick of building a real vocabulary. You do not collect words like stamps. You move them from one room of your life to another. 嗯，迁移这个词，说白了就是"旧词新用"。今天我故意把前几天的词拽进工作话题里试试。Take commute, from our transport day. I used to say "I commute to work", and that still works. But now I can say the company I want is one where the daily commute does not eat the job. Same word, new shelf. Then infrastructure, also from the transport file. A firm's infrastructure, its systems and tools, decides how fast you actually move once you are inside. The old lane and the old railway we talked about, they were Liangzhou's infrastructure. A workplace has its own.其实我前几天学科技期那句 navigate，今天也能接上：navigate a career is just as real as navigate a city with your phone. 一个短语，从手机定位跨到职业规划，还是那个理。这就是迁移。Here is a sentence I want to keep: a well-connected company opens more doors than a big one. That well-connected was our transport word for a city with good links. Now it describes a network that helps you grow. Transfer done. The point is simple. Words are not locked to the day you met them. Once you know commute, infrastructure, navigate, well-connected, you can spend them anywhere. Today I spent them on work.

语法笔记

今天练迁移，顺手补一组最容易被忽略的：和 work 搭配的短语动词（phrasal verbs with work）。中文只说"做/搞定/处理"，英语分得细，分错就露怯。

• work on 是"着手做、持续打磨"：I am working on a new project，强调进行中、还没完。

• work out 有两个常用义：一是"锻炼"（I work out three times a week），二是"解决问题、想通"（we will work it out）。

• work through 是"逐一处理、挺过去"：work through a backlog（处理积压），work through a hard period（熬过难关）。

• work for 表"为…工作"，work as 表"担任…职务"，别混：I work for a small firm，I work as a teacher。

这些小搭配没有戏剧性的对错，但用顺了，整段工作英语立刻有真人味。迁移，往往就藏在这些可复用的小词里。

学科短文：How an economy divides its work

Every economy slices its work into three broad slices. The primary sector pulls things from the land, farming, herding, mining. The secondary sector turns those raw things into goods, the factories and the builders. The tertiary sector serves people, shops, schools, hospitals, software. This is the three-sector model, and it is the quiet backbone of modern economic geography.

Etymology makes the split vivid. Sector comes from Latin secare, to cut, as if you took a pie and cut it into pieces. Service traces back to Latin servire, to serve, the work of meeting another person's need. Manufacture, from manus (hand) and factura (a making), once meant literally made by hand, before machines took the word over.

What changed over the last century is the weight of each slice. Rich economies shifted from making things to serving people. A farmer's son now writes code for a firm that sells to the world. The chart below shows exactly that, how many workers each slice absorbs across seven economies in 2019. Liangzhou, anciently known as Liangzhou, was once a land where the primary slice dominated, herding and cropping under open sky. The world moved, and so did the work.

Thursday add-on. Today I want to unpack one line from Liang Shuming, the Chinese thinker who spent a whole life asking how a person should live.

In his essay "Three Attitudes Toward Life", he sorted the ways of living into three. The one he prized most he called 郑重, earnestness. His own words: 将全副精神照顾当下, put your whole spirit into the present, and live with all your strength, deliberately. The other two are 逐求, the chase, running after whatever you want, busy but not always growing; and 厌离, the turning-away, when a person sees through the world and wants to walk out of it. Liang put it plainly: the chase is the worldly road, earnestness is the moral one. 哲学家梁漱溟先生在《三种人生态度》中提出了三种不同的人生态度，分别是逐求、厌离和郑重。

A small note on the two characters. 郑 means grave and upright; 重 means heavy, weighty, the thing that carries weight. Stack them and you get "to treat something as weighty", not to hold it light. 逐求是向外追。追名利、享乐，被欲望推着走；厌离是回头看，冷静下来发现，人被欲望和社会争斗困住，活得太苦，于是想躲开；郑重是自觉尽力地活在当下，不靠外界诱惑，也不逃避。

Then bring it down to work. A job is worth more than its pay. To take the one thing in front of you today and carry it all the way through, that is 郑重 applied to the present. The chase asks "how do I earn more"; earnestness asks "did I do this well". Only a few days ago I told myself that being busy does not count, only real growth does. Liang's line gives that thought a Chinese floor to stand on. English can carry it too: A dignified job is less about the pay than about the care you bring to it. 多数人的进阶路线是：先追外物，碰壁后生出厌离，最后才真正学会认真生活。真能把日子过好的人，往往都先看透了生活有多苦。

引导理解（从凉州看世界）

From a table of employment shares to a single mountain at my hometown's back, work has always been how a place feeds itself.

A land where the first slice dominated. At the foot of 凉州莲花山（姑臧紫山）, a peak of the Lenglong range of the Qilian mountains at the head of the Gushui stream, some thirteen kilometres from the old city, the old saying still holds: 凉州畜牧天下饶, Liangzhou's herds were the richest under heaven. For most of its two thousand years, this was a primary-sector land, herding and cropping under open sky. The table I just read, with services near 80% in rich economies, measures a world Liangzhou had not yet joined. To read that table from Liangzhou is to see how far the work of the world has travelled.

A city planned like a workplace. The old city of Liangzhou still shows the outline of 姑臧卧龙城. The Book of Jin says it ran seven li from south to north and three li from east to west, its ground shaped like a coiling dragon. A walled city is, among other things, a vast coordination problem, thousands of people organised to eat, trade, and defend on time. Work was never only the field. It was also the gate, the market, the roster. Read it as "seven by three" or follow Professor Su Bai's reading from the tombs, the shape is still there, and so is the lesson that a place's layout is its first management system.

A craftsman's proof. The bronze horse from the Leitai tomb is the work of the former Liang state under Zhang Gui, proven by four silver seals. That horse is not just art. It is evidence of a craft tradition, skill passed hand to hand, the kind of craft the word craft still names today. Liangzhou does not guess at its past. It pins it down with objects, the way a good worker pins down a job.

A person called outward. Liangzhou sent one of its own far from home. Li Zixiao, a Liangzhou man born in 1760, left for the Chinese institute in Naples and came back a translator of the first rank. In the language of today's word, vocation, he was called to a task larger than the lane he was born in. A small place can still raise a person the world needs. A name that outlasts the voice. My great-grandfather had a saying he repeated to the family: 雁过留声，人过留名, a wild goose leaves its cry as it passes, and a person leaves a name. He meant that the work you do is the only thing that follows you after the voice is gone. Liangzhou has lived that saying for two thousand years. The herds, the walls, the bronze horse, the man who came home, they are all names this place left behind. To work is, in the end, to decide what name you leave.

Stand at the foot of 凉州莲花山（姑臧紫山） and you see it. The herds are still there, the dragon-shaped walls are still there, the bronze horse is still there, and the man who went out and came back is still remembered. Work, for Liangzhou, was never only survival. It was how a place kept its word with the world.
