From 46 Countries and regions: UNNC 2026 new students’ demographics and portrait
A new semester brings new faces and new stories. This year, the Class of 2030 has arrived at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) – 2,326 undergraduate students from 46 countries and regions, each bringing their own backgrounds, interests, and aspirations.
Among them, 1,904 are from Chinese mainland, and 422 are international students or come from China’s Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan – meaning roughly one in five newcomers is from outside the Chinese mainland.
Chinese mainland students hail from 28 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, with Zhejiang contributing the largest share (590 students, 30.99%), and Gansu the smallest (9 students, 0.47%). Among international and China’s Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan students, the majority are from Asia (81.04%), with Indonesia sending the most students, followed by Europe, Africa, North America, and South America.
Academically, the Class of 2030 is distributed across three faculties: 39.77% (925 students) in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, 34.05% (792) in the Nottingham University Business School China, and 26.18% (609) in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The most popular programmes include Engineering (447), Finance, Accounting and Management (339), International Business (315), Computer Science (236), and Economics (216). This year also marks the first intake for three new programmes: Financial Technology, Big Data Management and Applications, and Management Science.
The gender balance is nearly even, with 48.88% male and 51.12% female students (a ratio of roughly 1:1.04). Among the faculties, Science and Engineering has the highest male-to-female ratio at about 1:0.52, while the Business School and FHSS show ratios of 1:1.50 and 1:1.91 respectively.
The age range among this year's cohort spans nine years – the oldest born in 2001 and the youngest in 2010 – with the majority (61.35%) born in 2008. Seven students even share their birthday with UNNC's anniversary on 20 May.
When it comes to surnames, Wang (147), Zhang (137), and Li (108) top the list, while 90 students have unique surnames, including Kuai, Tong, Kuang, and Xu. Among Chinese mainland students, 127 come from 16 ethnic minorities, with Manchu being the largest group, and several others represented by just one student each.
Beyond academics, about 60.50% of newcomers have a special skill or hobby – among them are a bronze medallist at the National Biology Olympiad, a two-time national karate champion, and an international chess master.
From different places and with diverse talents, they have now gathered on the same campus, sharing one name: the Class of 2030 UNNCer. Welcome to UNNC – your journey starts here.
