03

Yvonne Featherer:

Yvonne Featherer

Charlotte Knight-Benjafield

Charlotte Knight-Benjafield

Lucy Trotter

Lucy Trotter

Is Officially Released

At this conference, distinguished guests jointly witnessed the official release of the KingLead 2026 China International Kindergarten Development White Paper.

The KingLead 2026 China International Kindergarten Development White Paper was compiled and released by the KingLead Research, drawing on KingLead's eight years of industry research accumulation and cutting-edge practical exploration. The development of international kindergartens in China is a systematic endeavor involving educational philosophy, curriculum systems, faculty development, and quality assurance. Starting from the conceptual definition and development background of international kindergartens in China, this white paper conducts a systematic analysis across three major dimensions: the macro development environment of the industry, the current status and challenges facing international kindergartens in China, and future development directions and strategic pathways. The white paper integrates the four major international kindergarten rankings released by KingLead in 2026—the KingLead China International Kindergarten Brand Value Top 100, the KingLead China International Kindergarten Innovative Competitiveness Top 100, the KingLead China International Kindergarten Characteristics Rankings, and the KingLead China International Kindergarten Competitiveness Ranking—into its analysis, together with the evaluation framework and research findings of the newly launched China International Kindergartens City Index. From the perspective of kindergarten administrators and industry decision-makers, it systematically reviews industry practices and cutting-edge explorations in brand building, innovative practices, characteristic development, and quality improvement among international kindergartens in China.

This white paper aims to provide systematic and forward-looking development guidance for decision-makers, administrators, and practitioners of international kindergartens in China, helping kindergartens build a future-oriented early childhood innovation education system while grounded in their own curricula and characteristics. By strengthening internal capabilities and organizational resilience, it seeks to propel kindergartens into a virtuous cycle of coordinated development between educational quality and social reputation, thereby achieving long-term sustainable development.

On behalf of the Xiehe Education, Ms. Zhao first extended her congratulations on the successful convening of the KingLead 2026 World Kindergarten Conference, and expressed her gratitude to KingLead for bringing the world's foremost academic perspectives down to the core nurturing scenarios of early childhood education, thereby building a high-end professional platform for dialogue and intellectual exchange among international kindergarten practitioners.

Ms. Zhao identified the core proposition of this forum—the opportunities and challenges that the era of artificial intelligence brings to internationalized early childhood education. She noted that AI is comprehensively reshaping the educational ecosystem and talent evaluation standards, and that future core competitiveness has shifted from knowledge accumulation to curiosity, imagination, and critical and creative thinking—abilities whose golden period of cultivation is rooted in the early childhood education stage. AI has not only broken down the resource barriers and high-threshold patterns of traditional internationalized education, making quality curricula and personalized nurturing approaches more accessible, but has also introduced new industry challenges such as rapid technological iteration, educational homogenization, and the absence of humanistic companionship.

Drawing on Xiehe Education's more than three decades of school-running accumulation underpinned by the core value of "Developing in Harmony, where East Meets West", and the 28 years of practical experience of its Fortune Kindergartens, Ms. Zhao shared Xiehe's educational exploration guided by "two bottom lines and three pathways": upholding "technology as instrument, children as the foundation" and "local roots, global wings", empowering nurturing through AI, integrating global quality teaching models while remaining grounded in local contexts, and advancing practice by protecting imagination, cultivating critical and creative thinking, and building a dual-track development framework, thereby providing a reference for the industry.

Finally, Ms. Zhao called upon her colleagues across the early childhood education sector to return to the essence of nurturing, to jointly explore the development pathways of early childhood education in the AI era, and to collectively build a new internationalized early childhood education ecosystem that integrates Chinese and Western elements.

Keynote Speeches:

Decoding the AI Era Proposition, Exploring Innovative Practices in International Kindergartens

At present, artificial intelligence continues to reshape educational models and the logic of nurturing learners. As the starting point for cultivating innovative talents, international early childhood education is entering a critical window of industry transformation. International kindergartens at the forefront of innovation are confronted with contemporary challenges concerning the essence of education and school operation models, while embracing development opportunities to explore innovative pathways.

Keynote Speech 1

Western Academy of Beijing Early Childhood Center,

Vice principal,

Yvonne Featherer

Solid Foundation for Early Childhood Growth

Yvonne Featherer, Vice Principal of Western Academy of Beijing Early Childhood Center, delivered a keynote speech themed "Building a strong foundation". She proposed that as technology is being deeply integrated into children's developmental environments, educators are called upon to reflect on how the surrounding technological environment will impact long-established educational practices and what educational models should be developed for children.

According to Vice Principal Yvonne Featherer, no matter how technology advances, the core of early childhood education has always been to build the foundational capacities for children's lifelong development: ensuring young children's physical activity and sensory exploration in the real world, protecting and fostering sustained attention, nurturing creativity and the spirit of active inquiry, cultivating a sense of independence and self-efficacy, honing communication, expression and information processing skills, and developing critical thinking and sense of collaboration. These core competencies form a solid foundation for children to navigate future changes.

She stated that AI can serve as an educational support tool to assist teachers in optimizing instructional design, analyzing children's learning status, enhancing the efficiency of home-school communication, and freeing up more energy to return to the essence of nurturing children. In response to the trend of parents accessing educational information via AI, educators should make adequate preparations and guide parents to properly leverage technology to form educational synergy. She concluded by emphasizing that childhood and early childhood education are non-renewable resources that exert a lifelong influence on individual development. Early childhood education should always return to its educational essence, and lay a solid foundation for young children's growth.

Keynote Speech 2

The Kindergarten of GCGS,

Principal,

Jun Zhang

Foundations and Innovation for

International Kindergartens in the AI Wave

Jun Zhang, Principal of the Kindergarten of GCGS, delivered a keynote speech on "Change and Continuity in Early Childhood Education in the AI Era". Principal Jun Zhang observed that educational forms in different eras have distinct emphases: education in the industrial era prioritized standardization and teacher leadership, whereas the AI era advocates personalization, student agency, and competency orientation. With the advancement of AI, education should place greater emphasis than ever on igniting children's innovative thinking and cultivating creative abilities—core qualities that artificial intelligence cannot replace. On this basis, early childhood education can further focus on core competencies such as curiosity, empathetic expression, and the spirit of inquiry, advancing children's learning from surface-level cognition to deeper exploration.

Drawing on the IB PYP curriculum and the practice of multiple intelligences education, he stated that the philosophy of whole-person education should be upheld, with the educational perspective focused more on children's innate strengths, discovering and amplifying each child's potential, and cultivating children's comprehensive abilities in relation to self, society, and nature through transdisciplinary themes. In everyday scenarios, this means protecting children's nature and innate creativity, and highlighting the irreplaceable humanistic warmth of education.

In his view, the distinguishing feature of internationalized education in China lies in the integration of Chinese and Western elements, achieving the mutual integration and co-existence of Chinese and Western wisdom. Looking ahead, it is necessary to rely on the established laws of nurturing to address the uncertainties brought by technological change, focusing on cultivating interdisciplinary, well-rounded talent and on shaping underlying ways of thinking and learning habits. As the starting point of growth, Kindergartens must be all the more firmly rooted in the essence of nurturing, balancing professional depth with a holistic perspective.

Roundtable Dialogue:

Pooling Frontline Practical Wisdom, Forging Consensus on Early Childhood Education

The wave of technology is constantly unlocking new possibilities in education. As AI tools gradually integrate into educational settings, how to effectively cultivate innovative abilities at the early childhood stage has become a highly practical question facing education practitioners. How technology can serve young children's development and what fundamental principles education should uphold have also sparked extensive reflection and discussion among international kindergarten practitioners.

The roundtable dialogue at this KingLead conference created a dedicated exchange platform for kindergarten practitioners. Four principals from renowned international kindergartens gathered at the event, including Xiaohong Liu, Principal of Fortune Kindergarten Longyang Campus; Charlotte Knight-Benjafield, Principal of EYCS, Wellington College International Shanghai Early Years Centre; Lucy Trotter, Head of Early Years, Hiba Academy Hangzhou Nursery; and Xiaobo Wang, Vice Principal of Tsinglan School Kindergarten. They carried out professional discussions centered on the theme Challenges and Opportunities in the Age of AI: How to Cultivate Children's Innovative Abilities.

Fortune Kindergarten Longyang Campus,

Principal,

Xiaohong Liu

Principal Xiaohong Liu noted that in the AI era, the cultivation of young children's innovative capacity can be built around critical thinking, problem-solving and empathy development. Ages 3 to 6 are a critical period for children to form thinking habits, and innovative thinking needs to be gradually nurtured from an early age. The kindergarten integrates innovation literacy into its distinctive curriculum. It fosters critical thinking and hands-on practice through approaches such as Philosophy for Children (P4C) and thematic inquiry. Meanwhile, it promotes the transformation of teachers' roles: shifting from knowledge transmitters to guides who inspire children to explore and think, protecting the space for children's independent thinking and native creativity.

Wellington College International Shanghai Early Years Centre,

Principal of EYCS,

Charlotte Knight‑Benjafield

Principal Charlotte Knight-Benjafield proposed that play serves as a vital vehicle for young children to develop social-emotional competence, intrinsic motivation and adaptive problem-solving skills, laying a solid foundation for children to cope with an unknown future. The kindergarten is committed to creating a classroom atmosphere that embraces trial and error. Teachers serve as partners in children's play and role models for their growth, giving children ample time for independent exploration and supporting their natural development through genuine peer interactions and everyday scenarios.

Hiba Academy Hangzhou Nursery,

Head of Early Years,

Lucy Trotter

Head of Early Years Lucy Trotter believes that innovation stems from children's innate curiosity, which acts as the intrinsic driving force motivating them to keep exploring. Returning to the fundamentals of daily education, the kindergarten establishes a stable and structured daily routine and builds positive home-community partnerships, reserving ample psychological space for children's exploration. She proposed that growth is embedded in the small moments of daily life, requiring dedicated cultivation of educational details to accumulate strength for children's long-term development.

Tsinglan School Kindergarten,

Vice Principal,

Xiaobo Wang

Vice Principal Xiaobo Wang, based on the kindergarten's educational practice, shared explorations of how AI can empower teachers' teaching skills with a focus on cultivating young children's innovation abilities. Leveraging technological strengths, the kindergarten applies AI to lesson evaluation for aesthetic education courses, continuously iterating and improving the quality of teacher-child interactions and teachers' instructional competencies. At the same time, the kindergarten has established tiered and scientific guidelines for AI use, consistently upholding the principles of prioritizing children's independent thinking and authentic experiences, and reasonably balancing the relationship between intelligent tools and real-world exploration in daily teaching.

The shared insights from four principals of international kindergartens encompass cutting-edge international early childhood education philosophies, practical explorations rooted in frontline teaching practice, and implementation-oriented thinking on AI-enabled innovative education, providing valuable experience and implications for the development of innovative early childhood education.

Sub-Forum 2

"Innovative Practices of International Kindergartens in the AI Era"

Against the backdrop of AI-driven transformation in early childhood education, principals of renowned international kindergartens from various regions have focused on the central thrust of industry development. Drawing on their respective kindergartens' practical experience and achievements, they shared in-depth perspectives from multiple angles and sparked intellectual exchanges.

In terms of educational philosophy, participating guests broadly agreed on an educational orientation rooted in Chinese cultural foundations and informed by a global vision. They advocate a return to the essence of child development, prioritize the cultivation of independent thinking, innovative spirit and sound personality, and aim to build children's comprehensive competitiveness for the AI era. In terms of curriculum development, participating guests pointed out that international early childhood education is not a simple juxtaposition of Chinese and Western elements, but calls for in-depth integration with localized adaptation. Aligned with their respective educational positioning, kindergartens deliver a diverse curriculum covering Philosophy for Children (P4C), Montessori education, STEM education, thematic inquiry, play-based learning and more. They emphasized that learning should be anchored in real-life scenarios and daily activities, enabling children to develop core competencies through active exploration and hands-on experience.

In terms of technology application, the industry has reached a consensus that "AI is a tool, not a replacement". AI can assist teachers in teaching research and lesson planning, enable educational data governance, and optimize kindergarten operations. However, technology always serves the holistic development of human beings; the core values of teacher-child interaction, authentic play experiences and emotional bonding are irreplaceable. In terms of educational support systems, collaborative teaching between Chinese and foreign teachers, teacher professional development, and home-kindergarten partnership serve as key levers for implementation. Integrated teaching teams are formed through joint research and co-teaching by Chinese and foreign educators, and home-kindergarten collaboration is deepened through multicultural activities and parent-child practice programs, collectively fostering a holistic educational ecosystem.

Conclusion

The 2026 KingLead World Kindergarten Conference brings together global industry insights and cutting-edge wisdom in preschool education operation. Centered on the core theme of quality upgrading and innovative practices for international kindergartens in the AI era, the conference conducts in-depth discussions across core dimensions including quality standards, nurturing practices, and technology empowerment. The development of international kindergartens in the AI era is not the mere addition of technological tools, but the systematic upgrading of educational models and the in-depth optimization of the educational ecosystem; it is not fragmented exploration by individual kindergartens, but industry-wide collaboration for future-oriented talent cultivation. KingLead will continue to build a high-level, international platform for industry exchange and dialogue, advance the in-depth integration of cutting-edge global early childhood education concepts with China's local educational practices, empower more international kindergartens to cultivate distinctive features, refine educational quality, and pursue innovative development, and continuously empower and fuel the high-quality and innovative growth of China's international early childhood education sector.
