I was thinking back to 7 May 2019, when I had left Wuwei and gone to Beijing for a teacher-training programme at an education institute. The morning rush there hit different. I walked to the subway entrance and the first thing I noticed was how slowly the crowd moved. The platform was choked, commuters packed bumper to bumper. (嗯，choked 这个词我前两天在环境那期用过，形容空气，今天拿来形容人潮，竟然也顺。)

I muttered to myself, in a city like that, private vehicles only make everyone breathe harder. Then I squeezed onto the metro. Inside, I saw a woman listening to English on her phone, same as me, sort of. I thought, this is what mobility really means: not owning a car, but being able to move. The word mobility I picked up from the city and environment piece, and today it just jumped back into my mouth without me planning it. (这词儿是 09-11 城市环境那期学的，今天捡回来用，倍儿顺手。)

At the interchange I changed from one line to another. The crowd gave way to a steadier flow underground. Give way to, that phrase from the very first transport piece, 09-05, came back too. Funny how old words resurface when the situation fits. (give way to 是 09-05 交通学的，今天回想2019年5月7日北京地铁换乘口时又冒出来，这就是迁移吧。)

A tourist nearby was squinting at the map, clearly lost. I almost spoke up, then held back, my spoken English was still shaky back then. (这算元认知：知道自己一开口就卡，所以先憋着。今天聚焦维是迁移，我倒觉得开口的勇气也算迁移的一种，把敢说的劲头从独白挪到真实场景。)

When I stepped out at my stop, the sun was up and the streets were already alive. I realised transport is never just about vehicles; it is about how a city lets people meet, work, and return home. (vehicle 也是 09-11 的词，vehere 是运送，今天串起来讲交通，正好。)

Back then Beijing truly struck me: far bigger and busier than Wuwei, known as ancient Liangzhou. (北京真的不得了，比古凉州（武威）城大多了。)

That very day, 7 May 2019, I even snapped a photo at Beijing railway station; it stays sharp in my memory. (2019年5月7日那天，我还在北京火车站拍了一张照片，印象特别深。)

On that same trip I went to the Forbidden City alone, backpack on my shoulders. I remember it vividly. Back then I had not yet begun writing ci poetry and fu rhapsodies on a steady basis, and my grasp of cultural relics was still thin, so I walked those halls half-blind to what they held. Looking back now, I badly want to return to Beijing and see the Forbidden City again, this time with real care. (那趟我还一个人背包去了故宫，印象特别深。那时候我还没持续写诗词歌赋，对文物知识也不太懂，等于半蒙着眼睛逛。现在回想，真想再去一次北京，认真看看故宫。)

Without reading, with no grounding in history, culture, geography and transport, a trip stays at the level of a passing glance: you see the view but miss the story behind it. As Qian Zhongshu put it, if you do not read, then ten thousand miles on the road only make you a postman. (若不读书，缺了历史、文化、地理、交通的认知积淀，出门旅行往往只是走马观花：看见风景，却读不懂背后的底蕴。钱钟书先生说得透：不读书，行万里路，也只是个邮差。)

The old line goes, read ten thousand books and you still fall short of walking ten thousand miles; walk ten thousand miles and you still fall short of reading ten thousand faces. Now that I have learned how to dig into the sources and write a proper paper, if I went back to Beijing, the whole city would surely feel different. (读万卷书不如行万里路，行万里路不如阅人无数。现在我懂得怎么查阅文献、写论文了，若再去北京，感受肯定又不一样。)

That is my little monologue. Not perfect, but words are carrying over, and that is the whole point of today.

语法笔记

今天顺手用了一个结构：not ... but ...（不是……而是……）。"Transport is never just about vehicles; it is about how a city lets people meet." 这里用分号接一个 it is about，比硬套 not ... but ... 更自然，但意思一样是转折对比。口语里想强调"不是A而是B"，可以说 "It is not the car that matters, but the way the city moves you." 用强调句 it is ... that ... 把 not 嵌进去，考官一听就知道你在玩结构。

另一处：give way to 后面接名词或动名词都行，"the crowd gave way to a steadier flow"，flow 是名词，干净。

学科短文

Urban transport is, at its root, a problem of geometry and time. A city moves people by laying down a network of roads, rails and paths, then scheduling them so that flows rarely collide. The word transport itself tells the story: trans- means across, and portare is the Latin for to carry, so transport is literally "carrying across". The same root appears in portable and portfolio. Mobility, from the Latin movere, is the capacity to move, not the machine that moves you. When planners speak of infrastructure, they mean the under-structure (infra- = below) on which movement rests: bridges, signals, stations.

Modern cities chase multimodal systems, where a single trip may blend walking, a bus, a metro and a bike. The aim is to let people flow rather than queue. History shows the pattern is old: dense cities have always needed junctions and interchanges to keep thousands moving at once.

词源小知识：transport = 拉丁 trans-（横越）+ portare（搬运）；mobility = 拉丁 movere（移动）；infrastructure = 拉丁 infra-（在下）+ structura（建造）。三个词把"把人从A运到B、靠底层结构支撑"这件事拆得清清楚楚，也正好接上我将来要摸的拉丁语。

▍ 名人金句解读（周四加餐）

Robert A. Heinlein wrote: "Specialization is for insects." A human being, he argued, should be able to do a great many things, not just one. The word specialization comes from Latin species, a kind or sort, the same root in species and specify. Insect traces to Latin insectum, "notched" or cut into, for the insect's segmented body.

My take: transport teaches the same lesson. A city that relies on one mode, only cars, gets stuck. It needs the generalist's mind, buses, rails, bikes, feet, all working together. And learning a language is the same: today I carried old words (vehicle, give way to, mobility) into a new topic. That is exactly what Heinlein meant by not being a one-trick specialist. Breadth is a kind of freedom.
