Week 12|Knowing by Heart Is Not the Same as Knowing How to Use
Let Knowledge Touch the Ground
To remember something is good. But remembering is only the beginning.
A formula, a sentence pattern, a historical date, or a classical line may sit neatly in the mind. Yet when a real problem appears, you may still feel unable to use it. This does not mean memory is useless. It only means that knowledge has not yet found its road to action.
In Xunzi, Encouraging Learning, there is a useful idea: spending a whole day only thinking is not as good as learning for a short while; standing on tiptoe is not as good as climbing to a higher place and seeing more. The point is simple: the mind needs support, method, and contact with the world.
Dujiangyan is a good example. According to UNESCO, the Dujiangyan irrigation system began in the 3rd century BCE and still controls the waters of the Minjiang River, distributing water to the Chengdu plains. It is not just an idea about water. It is knowledge turned into channels, slopes, openings, and long-term use.
Learning should also become usable. If you memorize an English phrase, try to write one sentence with it. If you remember a math rule, try to explain why it works. If you learn a historical event, try to connect it with geography, people, and choices. If you read a classical line, ask how it may speak to life today.
A student becomes stronger not only by storing knowledge, but by moving knowledge. Knowledge that can move from the page to the hand, from memory to speech, from a rule to a problem, becomes your own.
This week, choose one thing you have memorized recently. Do not stop at reciting it. Use it once: write with it, explain it, solve with it, or connect it to a real example. When knowledge touches the ground, it begins to belong to you.
Source Notes
The Xunzi reference comes from Encouraging Learning, where Xunzi contrasts merely thinking or standing on tiptoe with learning and climbing higher for a broader view. The English wording here is original and simplified for this article. The Dujiangyan example is based on UNESCO’s World Heritage description, which states that construction began in the 3rd century BCE and that the system still regulates the Minjiang River and distributes water to the Chengdu plains.
