Rethinking The Future Awards

Ms. Ma Xiaoyi, the lead architect responsible for the theater’s design, explains:The Muse Design AwardsandArchitizer A+Awardsrecognize excellence in architectural design and its global impact.
The Rethinking The Future Awards, meanwhile, place particular emphasis onforward-thinking architectural design.
In other words, what the juries recognized in D+ was not simply a theater that performs its functions exceptionally well, but also a space shaped by ideas that are uniquely Daystar.
Almost Infinite Ways to Use the Space
Daystar’s campus is intentionally compact, which means D+ needs to make the most of every square meter. Performances, assemblies, Open Houses, graduation ceremonies and many other events all take place here.
To make this possible, D+ uses motorized retractable seating, a system widely used in university venues, allowing the space to be configured in almost limitless ways.

Breaking with Tradition Through Natural Light
Apart from theater and dance performances that require a completely dark environment, most activities in D+ benefit from natural light.
Windows along the auditorium walls and a glass curtain wall behind the stage bring generous daylight into the building. The two-way stage further connects the indoor and outdoor spaces.
It is the first two-way stage of its kind in Beijing.

An Unusually Neutral Palette
Traditional theaters often use rich, dramatic colors such as red and gold, while experimental theaters may favor blue or green.
But D+ also hosts exhibitions, Open Houses and many other kinds of events. A strongly defined color scheme could easily compete with the theme or atmosphere of a particular event. Bold theatrical colors also felt somewhat at odds with Daystar’s character.
D+ therefore chose natural materials and a neutral palette rarely seen in conventional theaters. The result is a space that feels warm, bright, open and curious—a natural reflection of Daystar’s own welcoming and grounded spirit.

Beyond architectural creativity, the Rethinking The Future Awards also consider whether a project contributes to the development of culture and community.
In that sense, the recognition D+ has received also reflects something deeper: the way Daystar’s educational commitments are brought to life in this space.
A Place Where Students Become More Fully Themselves
D+ changes with the needs of those who use it.
Classes, rehearsals, performances, debates, art exhibitions, international conferences, graduation ceremonies, staff appreciation events—and even strategic conversations about the future—all take place here.
Each becomes part of the ongoing story of growth.

Not long ago, a group of students from fourth grade through tenth grade rehearsed the musical 10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse at D+.
For months, they practiced sprinting, falling, getting back up and groaning like zombies—again and again.
Within the apparent chaos of the musical, they experienced the joy of collaboration, commitment and creativity.
What began with hesitation and uncertainty gradually grew into confidence and focus. Humor and courage that might not always be visible in everyday school life emerged, one by one, onstage.

An ordinary theater may be noticed because of its architecture. But a theater that truly belongs to a school will ultimately be remembered for the people and stories within it.
Where Community Life Extends Beyond the School Day
D+ is also home to Beijing’s only two-way stage.
Behind the stage, a glass curtain wall measuring 16 meters wide and 5.5 meters high can slide completely open. Beyond it is not another wall, but trees, grass and an outdoor amphitheater.
Sunlight and greenery become a natural part of the stage. Indoors and outdoors, art and nature are no longer separated from one another.
After school, especially on Fridays, bands made up of teachers and parents rehearse and perform in the amphitheater, while people sit on the steps nearby, talking and spending time together. Parents also use the space after school to raise funds for charitable projects.
D+ is no longer simply a building on campus. It has become a place where community life continues and grows.

D+ was designed as a space that can keep changing.
In many ways, this reflects how we understand education.
We do not rush to define what a student—or a community—should become. Nor do we want to offer only one predetermined path. Instead, we want to leave room:
for different interests to be discovered, for new ideas to emerge, and for students, through one experience after another, to gradually find a direction of their own.
The “infinite space” of D+, therefore, extends far beyond the building itself.
