In a residential building in Wuhan's Jiangxia district, Hubei province, a former serviceman has turned his living room into an unlikely summer boot camp, and the "recruits" are his own nephews.

Gao, a veteran who now runs a children's sports-training business, found himself hosting a dozen young relatives this summer after his sisters and sisters‑in‑law pleaded for help. Their children, all around the same age, shared the same problems: staying up late, refusing to get out of bed, skipping meals, and, above all, being glued to their phones. With the parents working far from home and grandparents too old to enforce discipline, the holiday chaos had become unbearable.

So the families sent the children to Gao's apartment, trusting his military background and coaching experience to straighten things out. Gao promptly cleared the space: he laid down exercise mats, removed the television and sofa, and banned any corner where a child might slack off.

The daily schedule is rigorous. At 6 am, everyone is up for a mountain hike. By 9, they are doing boxing drills and basic fitness. From 10 to 11, it is homework time, with older children tutoring the younger ones. After a compulsory midday nap, afternoons are spent on outings — visiting science museums or doing farm chores in the countryside. Evenings bring an hour of physical training, followed by board games and social time. The only screen time allowed is a single hour of mobile phone use in the evening, granted as a reward for good behaviour.

Within just two weeks, Gao says the changes have been striking. The phone‑addicted kids now voluntarily put down their devices and challenge each other to running and boxing contests. The ones who used to cry or fight have learned to cooperate and share tasks.
Gao hopes the boot‑camp experience will stick with them long after summer ends. "I want them to take the discipline, perseverance, and team spirit into their everyday lives," he said.
