扬子:即西汉扬雄,西汉贫寒著书文士;

Ballad of Chang’an’sSplendid Ways

By Lu Zhaolin (EarlyTang Dynasty)

Translated by WangYongli

Broad Chang’an laneswind through narrow side alleys slowly,

Black oxen, whitesteeds pull scented carriages lowly.

Royal jade chariotsdrift past nobles’ manors grand,

Golden whip cordsstream toward lords’ estates on every land.

Dragon carved canopiescatch morning sun’s warm ray,

Phoenix tassels trailsunset’s soft crimson display.

Long silken threadstwist round each tree in eager race,

Flocks of tenderwarblers sing above each blooming space.

Bees and butterfliesdrift by a thousand gates pale frame,

Jade terraces, greentrees unfold ten thousand tints of flame.

Interlaced corridorsbear peony carved window panes,

Twin watchtowers’rafters spread out phoenix feather veins.

Lady Liang’s paintedpavilion pierces the mid‑sky height,

Han Emperor’s bronzepillar rises past the cloud’s faint light.

Those on towers gazefar yet never chance to meet,

Crossing roadways sideby side—can our two glances greet?

Ask the maid who playedflute beneath purple mist’s soft haze,

Who learned gracefuldance within her youthful spring days.

If paired as flounderfish, I’ll greet death without regret;

As mandarin duck pairs,I crave no heaven’s royal debt.

Such duck pairs deserveall praise from every mortal eye,

They drift in twain, unseen beneath your watching sky.

I hate bed curtainsstitched with one lone phoenix bird,

I’ll hang door drapesembroidered with paired swallow herd.

Swallows flit roundpainted beams in constant paired flight,

Silk curtains, kingfisher quilts steeped in turmeric incense light.

Cloud‑soft tressesframe cicada shaped locks fine and thin,

Pale crescent goldtraces each brow’s delicate skin.

Powdered maidens glideforth in slow carriage procession,

Each bears uniquecharm, each wears a different expression.

Noble youths ridepiebald steeds marked with iron coin stain,

Courtesans’ goldenhinges coil carved dragon vein.

Crows cry within theCensorate’s dim twilight air,

Sparrows crowd theMinister’s empty stone stair.

Dim vermilion citywalls line jade paved thoroughfares,

Dark painted carriagecanopies sink by golden dyke’s soft layers.

Men carry slings, hawkstake flight north of Duling mound,

Swordsmen seekvendettas west of Wei River’s wooden ground.

Each bears hibiscusforged swords, a band of knightly friends,

To lodge withcourtesans where peach blossom boughs descend.

Courtesans don purplesilk gowns as daylight fades away,

Clear songs exhale richheady fragrance all the day.

North halls holdbeauties bright as moon each single night,

South lanes teem withriders dense as piled cloud’s soft height.

South lanes and northhalls stretch to Northern Pleasure Quarter,

Five main roads, threeavenues link every market border.

Willow and locustboughs brush the earth with tender sweep,

Vivid mortal mist anddust obscure the sky’s blue deep.

A thousand imperialguards parade in ordered row,

Parrot goblets brimwith kingfisher infused wine’s bright glow.

Silk jackets, gemmedbelts slip loose for your delight,

Yan ballads, Zhaodances unfold through day and night.

Yet mighty lords holdpower high, their sway commands the sun and moon,

No other noble’s claimof rank shall their proud heart attune.

Their arrogance oncecrushed brave General Guanfu’s name,

Their sole authoritybrooked no Chancellor Xiao’s mild claim.

Proud lords, boldheroes mounted on green horned steed,

Ride soft springbreezes, freed from every worldly need.

They boast their songand dance shall last a thousand years unbroken,

Their pomp outshinefive ancient lords of fame unspoken.

But seasons and glorywill not linger one brief hour,

Blue seas turn mulberryfields within a moment’s power.

Where jade steps andwhite marble halls once stood upright,

Now only green pinetrees stand o’er empty ground’s pale sight.

Quiet and humble isYang Xiong’s lonely dwelling place,

Year after year, scrolls pile high upon his wooden base.

Only southern mountaincassia blooms unfold soft hue,

Drift back and forth, brushing the hem of your silk robe’s faint blue.

1)Yang Xiong (53 BCE–18 CE), a reclusiveWestern Han scholar famous for his literary works and poverty.

2)Guanfu & Chancellor Xiao, Guan Fuwas a blunt and upright general of the Western Han; Chancellor Xiao refers toXiao He. Together, they represent the power struggles among powerful ministersat court.

Hard Road of Life

By Lu Zhaolin (EarlyTang Dynasty)

Translated by WangYongli

To Chang'an's north, bythe Wei's old bridge of cold stone,

Dead tree trunksstretch across old plowland’s barren zone.

Once crimson, onceviolet blooms bloomed all around,

Holding mist bydaylight, holding smoke above the ground.

Spring light, springwinds paint petals white as falling snow,

Fragrant carts andcoaches clog the crowded roadway’s flow.

What wanderer wouldfail to pluck each fragrant bloom?

What courtesan wouldnot pluck them for her room?

Courtesans wear silksocks, capes stitched with dragon scaled thread,

Noble youths on silversaddles ride a thousand steads ahead.

Orioles trill soft toevery blossom they behold,

Bluebirds tend theiryoung, side by side in fold.

Tall boughs stretchupward full a hundred feet in height,

Cassia and elm boughsveil the sun’s far golden light.

Coral leaves shelterpaired mandarin duck breeds,

Phoenix nests cradlefledgling phoenix tender seeds.

Nests crash, boughsbreak, phoenixes take flight and flee away,

Branches bare, leavesfall, tossed by wind through every day.

Once faded andwithered, no soul pauses to sigh,

Through endless agescrushed, can you know the reason why?

Man’s rank and fortunehold no fixed eternal bound,

Joy and splendor vanishwithout a single sound.

Who can hold back thesun sinking westward slow and pale?

Who can dam theeastward river’s endless rushing trail?

Walk among them, griefwells deep within each mortal vein.

Once ministers of twothousand shi official grade,

Each thought his gloryten thousand years would never fade.

Now rosy lips and jade‑softcheeks we see no more,

Only pale thorns andyellow grave earth stand before our door.

Golden ermine robes aretraded for rich wine’s bright cheer,

Jade dust fans wavefree, no need to count each copper sphere.

I send word tocompanions in the celestial hall,

True friendship enduresthrough life and death’s dividing wall.

Beneath Azure DragonGate you never come to meet,

By White Crane Hill, soon I shall leave this mortal street.

Cloud realms anddistant seas lie far beyond our sight,

When shall our loyalhearts unite in shared delight?

May sage Yao’s peacefulreign stretch to a million years,

I’d gladly live ashermit Chao and Xu through all my years.

Red Steed

By Lu Zhaolin (EarlyTang Dynasty)

Translated by WangYongli

The chestnut steedbears golden saddle's gleaming show,

Marching far toGaolan’s frontier winds that blow.

Border gate winds cutsharp with biting bitter chill,

The Great Wall’swinding streams run cold and silent still.

Snow dims jade pendantsclinking on his rein,

Long mountain trailsexhaust his breath in foamy strain.

I dare traverse theboundless desert’s barren sand—

When shall thewarriors’ shed blood finally end?

Generals march forththrough purple frontier mountain pass,

Modu’s Xiongnu hordecamps in Wutan’s wild grass mass.

Reed flutes blare loudnorth of Wild Goose Gate’s tall hill,

Battle lines spreadwide south of Dragon Hill’s cold rill.

Carved hunting bows humsoft through midnight’s quiet hour,

Iron warhorses march infile at dawn's first shower.

I would hold back thesun’s westward sinking glow,

Till every foe fallsdead where raging battles flow.

Bright lanternsoutshine all the splendor of the year.

Rich colored lightspart far across the darkened ground,

Meditations on AutumnNight, To Wang Shi

By Lu Zhaolin (EarlyTang Dynasty)

Translated by WangYongli

Quiet south chamberholds the midnight silent hour,

My heart drifts soft toone I cherish with all power.

The Milky Way sinkso’er wild goose park’s pale shore,

Bright moon descendsbeside whale carved pool’s marble floor.

Phoenix terraces humclear refined sweet melody—

Who breathes thisgentle tune beneath the moon for me?

Crimson lips part, ivory teeth stand soft between,

Sweet soaring notesascend to cloud’s furthest sheen.

Autumn leaves swirlround my humble narrow lane,

Cold dew weighs bareboughs in empty courtyard plain.

I long to sing amatching verse to your sad lay,

Lament of Zhaojun

By Lu Zhaolin (EarlyTang Dynasty)

Translated by WangYongli

The favor of the thronewithin the hall has ceased,

From Jiaohe few envoysnow the long road released.

With liver and bowelstorn, I quit the jade-wheeled car,

My form and shadowdrift toward Golden Mount afar.

On Han’s own soil thegrasses should be freshly green,

Where Xiongnu courtstands, desert sands go driving sheen.

Would I might followautumn wild-geese on their flight,

And once each yearreturn from this far mournful height.
