The four seas rest in peaceful harmony.
I ask what causes this tumultuous strife—
They answer: “Chu is levying troops forlife.
They cross the Lu in fifth-month’s burningblaze,
To march to Yunnan’s distant, war-tornways.”
The timid conscripts are no valiant men;
The southern wilds are far beyond theirken.
They wail aloud, parting from sires sodear;
The sun and moon grow dim with sorrow’stear.
Their tears are spent, then blood begins tostart;
Their hearts are crushed, and silence holdstheir heart.
Like trapped beasts facing tigers fierceand fell,
Like starving fish that whales in oceanquell—
A thousand march, and scarce one sees hishome;
Who casts his life to war, how can he roam?
O for the ancient dance of shield and axe,
To tame the Miao without these bloodytracks!

To carve a monkey on a thorn’s fine tip
Costs three years’ toil, and wastes thecraftsman’s grip.
Though finished well, the work has no trueuse;
It only decks the artist with abuse.
I yearn for King Wen’s grand and ancientlays;
Their hymnal fame has faded in these days.
Where is the master carpenter of Ying,
Who with one stroke could shape a flawlessthing?

抱玉入楚国，见疑古所闻。
