Many say they feel as though they are living two different lives across the two platforms. Without even realizing it, adopting different roles on different social media platforms has become an unspoken norm for many young people.
This tendency can be explained by a concept in social psychology known as role expectations. The theory suggests that people occupy different social roles, and those around them hold certain expectations about how they should behave in each one. As a result, we naturally adjust our "script" depending on the setting and the audience.

Weibo, as a more open social platform, is built around relatively weak social ties and public interaction. Users tend to prioritize self-expression over impression management, making it more of an emotional outlet and a place to vent everyday frustrations.
WeChat Moments, by contrast, is centered on sharing within a closer social network. Photos and captions are often carefully curated, reflecting a process psychologists describe as impression management. What people post shapes not only their personal image but also how they maintain relationships and social capital within their circles.

Presenting different sides of ourselves on different platforms does not necessarily mean we're being inauthentic. Different social spaces encourage different forms of self-expression, and as long as those roles reflect genuine parts of who we are, switching between them is simply another way of navigating modern social life.
