Summers in Lingnan are long, humid, and sweltering. More than a thousand years ago, Eastern Jin physician Ge Hong wrote that local herbs could clear the region's damp heat. Today, a cup of herbal tea remains the go-to cure for "heatiness." When Qing scholar Yuan Mei traveled through Guangdong, he craved a bowl of sweet soup to beat the heat, and Cantonese sweet soups proved to be the perfect answer.
The tradition of iced treats is just as old. A Song Dynasty dessert melted like snow, and now Cantonese iced treats and chilled drinks carry that legacy forward, even reaching global markets. From herbal brews to sweet soups and icy delights, these Cantonese delicacies embody a timeless wisdom: living in harmony with the seasons. May we all turn life's bitter summers into a gentle, mellow season of our own.
