近代波斯历经塞尔柱、蒙古统治，1501年伊斯马仪一世建立萨非王朝，开启近代史。萨非覆灭后进入分裂时代，卡扎尔王朝受政治经济问题困扰，1925年巴列维王朝通过政变夺权推行西化改革，却因君主专制引发不满。1979年霍梅尼发动伊斯兰革命，建立伊朗伊斯兰共和国。
