Culturally, the nation is defined by K-Pop and Esports, symbols of a digital-savvy, youthful society. However, beneath this polished surface lies a rigid social structure. Mandatory Military Service remains a defining rite of passage for every male citizen, reinforcing a sense of national discipline and a lingering "security-first" mindset. Yet, this same society, so advanced in technology and arts, remains trapped in a primitive political cycle of "Winner-Takes-All" retribution—a phenomenon we call Prisoner’s Politics.

In South Korea, this has evolved into a literal "Prisoner’s Politics." Since the founding of the Republic in 1948, the presidency has not been a crowning achievement of a career, but rather a temporary stay of execution.The current 2026 judicial proceedings against former President Yoon Suk-yeol represent the absolute zenith of this systemic cycle.

The dilemma rooted from the economic structure of South Korea.The economy is dominated by Chaebols. This creates a structural "Bribery Trap." A President needs the Chaebols to drive national GDP; the Chaebols need executive favors to bypass regulations. Once a President leaves of fice, prosecutors audit the Chaebols' ledgers to find the inevitable "illegal political funds," turning economic policy into a criminal indictment.

South Korea is a constitutional democracy governed by the 1987 Constitution, which established a sharp separation of powers between the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. However, the system is characterized by an "Imperial Presidency, " where the President serves a single, non-renewable five-year term. This single-term limit was designed to prevent the return of military dictatorships but has inadvertently fueled "Prisoner's Politics. " Because the President cannot be re-elected, they often lose political leverage toward the end of their term, leading to aggressive uses of executive power to secure a legacy or protect themselves from future prosecution.
