Elizabeth Montgomery
Melissa Warehall

Balancing Academics and Art
Ben joined Daystar in Grade 4 and received offers from Rhode Island School of Design (Global Top 4), School of the Art Institute of Chicago (Global Top 11), the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, the University of Hong Kong, and other prestigious comprehensive universities.
"Applying to art programs at comprehensive universities requires extraordinary effort.
You need not only an exceptional portfolio, but also an outstanding academic record.
I believe one of the main reasons for my success was my ability to balance academics and art.
Academically, I worked hard on the SAT and TOEFL, while also participating in competitions such as debate. Artistically, I dedicated six to eight hours every weekend to creating and refining my portfolio.
For me, art is a profound conversation with myself. It pushes me to question the world around me and inspires me to create change through my work."

Drawing Inspiration from Everywhere
Jenny joined Daystar in Grade 8 and received offers from University of the Arts London (Global Top 2), Savannah College of Art and Design (Global Top 15), School of the Art Institute of Chicago (Global Top 11), Otis College of Art and Design, The University of Edinburgh, The Theatre School at DePaul University, and others.
"My favorite offer is in Stage Design at the University of the Arts London.
I've always been fascinated by theater and the way stage design uses space, lighting, and installation to tell stories.
At the same time, stage design is inherently interdisciplinary, encouraging creators to experiment across different media.
At Daystar, I had access to an incredible range of materials and artistic processes—from woodblock printing and plaster to large-scale installations.
This freedom allowed me to explore and discover my own artistic language.
My inspiration extends far beyond the art studio.
Debate sharpened my critical thinking. Physics helped me understand structure, space, and movement. Philosophy encouraged me to question reality, society, and human nature.
All of these experiences have profoundly shaped my artistic practice."

Great Portfolios Require
Time and Thought
Sunny joined Daystar in Grade 6 and was admitted Early Decision to Rhode Island School of Design (Global Top 4). She also received offers from Parsons School of Design (Global Top 3), Pratt Institute (Global Top 5), School of the Art Institute of Chicago (Global Top 11), Savannah College of Art and Design (Global Top 15), and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
"For me, art is the most natural and comfortable form of self-expression.
Especially when mixing colors, I experience pure joy.
I believe my success came from both my portfolio and my essays.
My portfolio demonstrated my technical ability and creative thinking, while my writing revealed my intellectual depth and individuality.
Together, they allowed admissions officers to truly understand who I am.
If I could offer one piece of advice about building a strong portfolio, it would be this: think deeply and invest fully.
I began preparing early and spent nearly every holiday in the studio. The process lasted well over a year.
Among my works, I am especially proud of a sofa sculpture and a guzheng installation.
The guzheng project involved a fascinating transformation: I first photographed the three-dimensional work, then assembled the images into a two-dimensional composition, before reconstructing it as a three-dimensional installation.
That journey—from 3D to 2D and back to 3D—is what makes the piece so compelling.
For younger students hoping to apply to top art schools, I have two suggestions.
First, start early.Portfolio preparation takes far longer than you expect, especially once DP coursework intensifies.
Second, choose a school that truly embraces openness and creativity.
Only in an environment like that can you fully express yourself without limitations.
For art students, that makes all the difference."

Using Art to Illuminate the Overlooked
Cici received offers from Parsons School of Design (Global Top 3), School of the Art Institute of Chicago (Global Top 11), Savannah College of Art and Design (Global Top 15), and four other universities.
"I love art because it speaks without words, yet carries immense power.
From a young age, I have always observed the world quietly.
This instinct—to perceive, understand, and reinterpret what surrounds me—became the foundation of my pursuit of fine art.
In recent years, my work has focused on marginalized and often overlooked communities.
This process has not only allowed me to help others, but has also brought me tremendous fulfillment.
While preparing my portfolio, I volunteered at Beijing Roundabout, a charity that supports underprivileged children through the sale of donated secondhand goods.
That experience deepened my awareness of vulnerable communities and directly influenced my sculpture, The Silence of the Body.
Through my work, I hope people will pay closer attention to the overlooked corners of our cities.
I aim to foster empathy, spark reflection, and encourage a deeper understanding of the world we share."

What Makes Our Art Students So Competitive?
Elizabeth Montgomery
Daystar DP Visual Arts Teacher
Daystar art students demonstrateexceptional technical proficiency across a wide range of media.
Beginning in the MYP years, they explore and practice diverse artistic forms. By the DP, they are able to specialize deeply in the mediums they are most passionate about, whether painting, sculpture, printmaking, or installation art.
Throughout this journey, they devote substantial time to research, experimentation, and reflection. Through classroom discussions and written analysis, they continuously refine both their ideas and their artistic practice.
It is this commitment to exploration and excellence that enables them to produce remarkable exhibition work and earn offers from some of the world's leading art schools.
Equally important is the sense of security students feel here.Even when projects fail or outcomes fall short of expectations, they know they will be supported, not judged. That confidence empowers them to take creative risks.
And great art has always required experimentation, failure, and growth.
Our students also excel at connecting their personal experiences with local and global social issues.Their work moves beyond self-expression to engage meaningfully with the world around them.
Michelle Liang
Daystar College Counselor
Top art schools are looking for multifaceted creators—students who can not only make compelling work, but also conceptualize projects, curate exhibitions, articulate ideas clearly, and bring creative visions to life.
That is exactly what Daystar students do.
They aredeeply passionate about artand eager to pursue it with dedication. At the same time, they maintainoutstanding academic performance.
This reflects Daystar's educational philosophy. We encourage students to observe society closely, investigate important questions, conduct independent research, and develop strong communication skills.
These are precisely the qualities that top art schools value most.
Another key advantage is their exceptional English communication ability.
Whether writing personal statements, preparing application materials, or interviewing with admissions officers, our students present themselves with confidence and clarity. They are able to tell their stories in ways that are thoughtful, compelling, and unforgettable.
Melissa Warehall
DaystarDirector of College Counseling
This year's art offers covered an exceptionally broad range of disciplines—from graphic design and visual communication to fine art, painting, stage design and fashion design.
This diversity reflects the strength and breadth of Daystar's art program.
From elementary school through middle and high school, students steadily build their technical foundations while discovering their own creative voices.
Every art school clearly outlines its application requirements. However, what truly impresses admissions officers is not simply the final piece, but the entire creative process, along with strong observational drawing and foundational skills.
That is why, during portfolio preparation, we work closely with each student—reviewing every piece, discussing every decision, and helping them determine what to include, what to refine, and what to remove.
The result is a portfolio that is cohesive, authentic, and highly persuasive.
