1956年7月正式入伍，毕业分配到南海舰队榆林基地，从基层干起。那些年南海形势不稳，他从航海长一步步做到舰长，亲身经历了多次海上任务。基地位于海南西南，负责南海巡逻，他很快就适应了风浪大的环境，学会了如何在复杂水域指挥舰艇。
